Powerslave is really good. Like really really good. I can't imagine somebody disliking it unless you, like, just hate long melodic lead guitar parts and theatrical singing as some ideological holdover of having been a punxxx or a noise rocker.

Their current overblown pseudo-prog incarnation is the exact reverse. 20 minute songs with less good ideas than the 5 minute throwaway "Losfer Words." No outrunning father time.

Yeah, who would hate those things just because they're horrible? It's got to be something else.

I like Iron Maiden a real lot and have for a long time.

If you are casually interested and want to check out the good stuff here's some live footage from most of the tours between 1980 and 1988:

Early 1980, first album record release show:

Late 1980, shortly before the second album was recorded. Adrian Smith had just joined:

1982, Number of the Beast tour. As a Maiden connoisseur I consider the 'Beast Over Hammersmith' concert film that this comes from to be the best single thing they ever put out. First album and tour with Bruce Dickinson:

1983, last show of the Piece of Mind tour. The triplet groove parts are just ferocious. First tour with Nicko McBrain:

1985, Powerslave tour. From the justifiably classic Live After Death concert film:

1988, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour:

Probably not going to get a lot of love from many people here, but that's a real deal live band.

^yep, and they're still good live (although not as great as 10 years ago even...) -- which reminds me I need to get my ticket for this summer's show :)

+1 on Beast over Hammersmith. Last time you could see Davey really headbanging

They're real metal. But I don't really care much for their music.

I do think, however, that it's pretty cool that one of the guys in the band is a professional aviator.

Came around on the first album, trying to get into the second. It's not going well, to be honest.

Innocent Exile is a personal favorite deep cut from that album. The title track is groovy too.

Really though, the live stuff is where it's at. Wikipedia tells me that between 1980 and 1989 they played over a thousand shows. They were really always about being an in the flesh band, the albums are almost incidental.

Here's a short concert film from around that time. It's really good:

Does Di'Anno totally flub the words on "Killers" in that video? I think I see why he got the boot.

It was a brand new song, that's what he came up with in the dressing room right before the show.

The Dickinson years still remain an impenetrable galloping air-raid screaming prog mess.

Still leaning towards CRAP, but that first record is a solid waffle.

I just got an OG USA press of Killers for cheap and this is a good opportunity to say that Iron Maiden with Paul DiAnno is up there with my most cherished metal music, NWOBHM or otherwise. The first album may be better for me personally (bonus: DiAnno's voice was still at the top of its game), but it and Killers are pretty much even in the necessity ranking. Soundhouse Tapes, BBC sessions, various comp tracks, and the early singles are all worth checking out too. The latter were all just recently reissued, actually.

Burning Ambition, the b-side to Running Free, is one of them and seems to be fairly overlooked.

They get through the set, because they're troopers. Clive Burr fans, take note. He's kicking all the arse in this one. Di'Anno, not so much.

It gets ridiculous at 15:15

Iron Maiden having a bad night have never looked cooler or more charming. And that's the line up for me... like Billy Joel, I'm a Di'Anno man.

Nice video.
