Shit. I remember reading an interview with Homme in a Polish magazine and when asked about Oliveri leaving the band (which was a recent or semi-recent event back then) he said something along the lines of "I haven't been talking about it till now but the asshole deserves it. I got him kicked from the band because I couldn't stand him beating his girlfriend constantly, that's it". I hoped he was just talking utter shit back then.

I'm not exactly sure why you think by suggesting that he not be in literally one of the biggest most famous rock bands in the world that I want him to starve to death or something. It's a total false equivalency This isn't the same as locking the dude up and throwing away the key at all. Honestly I'm finding it a little hard to believe that I'm being cast as some sort of right-wing nutcase for expecting society in general to materially show that beating women up is not OK, namely by denying woman-beaters a spotlight and pedestal.

Did Charlie Sheen deserve to keep his job earning six figures per episode on the highest-rating TV show in America too?

I wasn't insinuating anything beyond the fact that there's an obvious discrepancy there. He's a musician, they gave him a job as a musician for a bit. Hopefully they also told him that it was on the proviso he sorts himself out and stops being an asshole.

Whatever people do - including murder, assault, rape, child molestation etc - you have to try to integrate them back into society on some level. One of the most progressive ways to do this is to find them employment which utilises their existing skill-set, it's a proven way to rebuild people's sense of self-worth, which is an important step towards reform. You have to break the cycle to prevent repeat offending.

One of the few things beardy dude did reasonably well was play music with Josh Homme so it makes sense that they threw him a bone. He's very evidently never going to be in the band again but I actually think this is a rare occasion whereby Homme maybe got something right, though possibly for the wrong reasons.

New record comes out tomorrow. Normally, I don't care one way or the other for this band, but the weird little animated videos and song clips on their site are pretty cool and moody:

It does sound a bit Queens of the Stone Rÿche in places, though I'll probably check out the whole thing.

I ordered the Come reissue and this through Matador and they both arrived last week. I've listened to the new Queens of the Stone Age record, oh, about 4 times.

It's pretty good. He is a horrible lyricist. Horrible. Like "masses" rhyming with "masses" bad. But I am trying to think of more catchy songs right now and I'm failing. "If I Had a Tail" in particular hits the mark.

Dude can write a fucking riff!

I don't feel as if I wasted my money on this one, and I like it MUCH more than the last two albums (Paralyze and Vulgaris).

Listening to "I Appear Missing" on their website. The vocals are cheesy and the song is very predictable for the most part. The next one, Kalopsia, sounds like it was written by Zooey Deschanel.

I made it 2.5 songs. Horrible.

I was working in a data centre next door to Rough Trade today and there was a queue of maybe 500 kids waiting to buy this record at 6am.

there was no way the new one would've lived up to the hype, but i'm actually surprised of how mediocre it is. tried to give it more than a couple spins but it's just.. bleh

I fuck with "If I Had A Tail."

Looking back on it, it's kind of cool that "No One Knows" was a legitimate hit.

I haven't spent a lot of time with the new one but on first listen I hear a lot of Bowie-esque sounds in it. I'll give it a legitimate shot.

Listening to it now. It's OK. I agree with the Bowie comparison.

I saw the BBC performances of "If I had a Tail", and "I Sat by the Ocean" and I thought they were good songs. Good enough that I will buy the album.

Quite pleased with the new one. Pisses on the last 2 albums from a great height.
It's a lot less jarring an album than the previous few, it flows really well, no annoying radio chatter between songs.

The guests seem superfluous though. None of them get close to centre stage so you have to wonder, what was the point? I would like to have heard Grohl getting more to do too.
Other than that, it's pretty solid.

Better than the debut, Lullabies and Era Vulgaris
Not as good as Rated R and Songs for the Deaf

Much as I like 'songs for the dead', it's nowhere near as good as the debut record. That shit is not even up for discussion.

Matt Sweeney is a handsome man.
QOTSA is one of those bands I refuse to believe anyone REALLY gives a shit about. Like you might go see them if tickets are cheap or free and you wanna hear some loud, generic rock, but that's it...

The video above is pretty cool, and it makes it seem as though Homme is capable of making interesting music, which he most definitely was, however, this new QOTSA album doesn't do anything for me.
