DregsInTheCrowd wrote:I got into McLusky exactly two years ago next week. I love this band as much as I've loved any band. Every album is totally distinct. I bought each album in chronological order, so for a while, My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours was all I knew, and I LOVED that album. I still love that album.

whiteliberalonwhiteliberalaction, Joy, Friends Stoning Friends, Medium Is The Message, You Are My Sun, Mi-O-Mai - these are some of the best rock songs released in the last decade. "World Cup Drumming" is probably the closest they got on that album to the sound of McLusky Do Dallas, but in general, early McLusky is a different beast. I associate the spirit of this album with McLusky more than the other two albums. Their sense of the absurd and goofy comes through on this record even more so than Dallas, which is also absurd and hilarious, but also kind of blustery. Which is great for that album, but I think Dallas's humor is deepened by an understanding of My Pain And Sadness. And then there's dark-ass The Difference, which is also great, but uninviting. While the lyrics are a little more obvious, and occasionally a little sophomoric, that's pretty rare and usually My Pain And Sadness is impeccable.

Of their three records, My Pain And Sadness probably gets the least attention, and I can't understand why. It is one of the finest indie releases of the decade.

So there is two of us. 'My pain...' makes jump, dance, smile and sing.

I'm sure you're a great person, at your core, but you downloaded THAT album and had THAT reaction to that song? We do not live in the same universe, I think.

Wow. That was a baffling, confounding post.

That is, easily, one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I'd say top 100, for sure.

Is anyone else really into the song The All Encompassing Positive? This B side with Jon on guitar and vocals is incredible. Sounds absolutely nothing like Mclusky - Straight from the gut.

That's a fine song. Mclusky had a boat load of b-sides (conveniently located on the great Mcluskyism three disc set) that sounded nothing like Mclusky. I really like "Viva" and "Provincial Song" as well.

I just got to hear some of this Do Dallas for the first time a few nights ago...

I really liked it!

[The man who played this for me also told me how listening to McClusky in general had really helped him through a tough time (having both hips replaced!!) of just being stuck lying around bored and eating loads of painkillers, etc...]
My mind, it's a terrible diskette.

So I went to this horrible show here in Portland, Maine Friday but before I was at the show it was late and freezing-nuts cold and there was nowhere to paahk and I was wickid friggin' pissed and about to say, Fuck it and go home. But I had My Pain and Sadness...in the CD player and I needed to be out and hear some rock. And all the parallel parking spots were a foot too small and I'm all like, "I don't wanna talk about it I don't wanna talk about it...!"

Like a lot of great bands McLusky made it look easy and obvious but it couldn't have been that easy to be that frantic and loud and weird and messy and noisy and catchy and (sometimes) gorgeous.

I have had a lot of folks pimp this band to me over the years. Gotta say I'm not hearing it overall. I've heard a few tracks that are OK, there's something that seems a little ...calculated is not the right word...but that same feeling I get from listening to John Spencer do capital-R Rock.

And Future of the Left sounds like they wrote their record for the widest possible audience. A little rocking, a little scuzzy, some quirky antic-y stuff, all tied together with some shiny clean guitar lines. That guitar chorus thing in "Eritrea" sounds like something that could have come from Attack Attack. Let the verbal abuse begin.

Maybe there's something I've always missed or not understood with respect to Mclusky since so many of you fine people seem to like them, but my gut has always thought Mclusky was CRAP.

In the same way I've always found most of The Pixies' records to be boring, I find the Mclusky stuff boring.

Best thing to come out of Scotland since Thin Lizzy!

Ok, I'll stop now

I'll say it again, first side of their first LP is perfect.
