Not Crap at all!

Way more brooding, smacked-out, and hazy than the Mazzy Star stuff, but basically the same idea and the same people. Albeit w/the far huskier Kendra Smith in place of Hope Sandoval. More homegrown, more interesting, less pleasantly wallpaper-ish. Totally worthy of the abused tag "psychedelic." (Incredible that Animal Collective and Opal supposedly share a genre.) Nifty guitar and organ drones w/mysterious, dreamlike vocals.

Opal's Happy Nightmare Baby (along w/Blind Idiot God's debut and the These Immortal Souls album) is one of the few worthy products of SST's bloated late-'80s signing spree.

Excellent post-coital, post-drug/drinking binge, full-ashtray-at-5am kinda music.

There's a collection of early recordings released in '89 as well that might be even better than Happy Nightmare Baby.

Early Recordings, I think it was called. Very good. On the ill-fated Rough Trade U.S., perhaps.

I think it just gathers up Opal's first couple of EPs? (The first was recorded when the band was between names, credited to Kendra Smith/David Roback/Keith Mitchell, if I'm remembering right.)

There was also a slightly livelier single recorded under the name Clay Allison. Same people again, though.

man.. i'm so psyched to see this. i love dave roback and kendra smith.

love me some opal. such an amazing blend of washy doorsesque psychedelia and this childlike silliness. mebbe i'm a sap, but i really dig that, and despite liking mazzy star, kendra smiths voice just does it for me in a different way. hope sandovals got this lolita thing goin on-- kendra smiths just got this lost kid pathos.. and a kinda focused critical intelligence beyond the girly sexy shit. not to say i mind THAT.. but opal just has a smartness behind it that goes beyond the girliness.

I dig Roback's guitar playing, but I'll take Kendra's solo record any day over "Happy Nightmare Baby."

"Five Ways of Disappearing" has great hooks (In Your Head) and oddball stuff that works (Bold Marauder).

Kendra needs to make another record.

"Fell from the Sun" and "Harriet Brown" are two of my favorite songs. It's a perfect one-two punch, one after the other.

That's real awesome.

I wonder if Kendra Smith still lives in the woods, and if so, if she's seen Hillary Clinton recently and told her to fuck off.

To my ears, Early Recordings is the best thing to come out of that Paisley scene.

Early Recordings is really good stuff. Upon seeing this thread and being reminded of them, I've decided to seek out their proper album as well.

David Roback, RIP.

I thought I'd written a bunch about Opal, Kendra Smith, and Roback on this forum. Turns out it was all on the Mazzy Star C/NC but I'd rather bump this one. I'm bummed that he died.

I saw something online recently to the effect that apparently a fairly big label is trying to re-issue the Opal records. I can't believe Greg Ginn would give anybody permission to reissue anything released on SST, but who knows.

This sucks. I loved his languorous slide guitar. I came to Mazzy Star late as I was under the impression they were a neo-hippie, college rock band similar to 10,000 Maniacs and ignored them. Fade Into You was too undeniable though and through that I eventually discovered Opal and Rain Parade. Opal is the best of those bands, I suppose, but they were all worthwhile. Mazzy Star released an EP just a couple of years ago that was a small gem in its own right and had me excited for what came next.

I still have my LP copy of Happy Nightmare Baby that I picked up back in the 80s and I still put it on from time to time. Underrated record I thought no one really knew about! Glad to see some love.

At the time of his passing, Roback was working with Kendra Smith on finalizing the re-release of their two albums together, “Happy Nightmare Baby” and a compilation of their first EPs titled “Early Recordings (first released in 1989). Both albums have been unavailable for decades and are not currently available on streaming services, but are due for imminent release digitally and physically via Ingrooves Music Group.
