I like a few songs by The Who, and Live at Leeds is a great live album. But I really don't like The Who as a band. I find Pete Townshend just as obnoxious as Bono, and his guitar playing pretty uninspiring for the most part. Daltrey is a worthless front man, his macho posturing totally boring

Tommy and Quadrophenia are bloated garbage

CRAP

Their entire output from the sixties is not crap. Things start heading downhill in the seventies. The should have called it quits once Keith Moon died. All in all, NOT CRAP.

The Who certainly had their low points, but there are far too many high points that offset it.
Sell Out is incredible.
I like most of their 60's output.

Pete's playing is "uninspired?"
I can think of no more inspired playing from that era than his. The greatest rhythm guitarist ever, and this from a person who wouldn't even rank The Who in his Top 50 favorite bands.

I said "uninspiring". As in I listen to it and for the most part I find it boring. There are exceptions (Pinball Wizard being the only one that comes to mind).

Most inspired? Give me a break. This is the era that spawned Hendrix, McLaughlin, Neil Young, Lou Reed, Ron Asheton and about a billion other players that make Townshend look like an art school doofus

Seriously? You think that's some better guitar playing than what Pete can come up with?

Pete Townshend was never that unhinged or exciting.

But I don't want this thread to become VU vs The Who. If someone would like to make that into a thunderdome, be my guest. I probably wouldn't participate, seeing as how I don't even really like VU that much. I just find Reed to be a more interesting guitar player

One man's Unhinged is another man's Fucked Up on Drugs and Unable to Perform.

I really like VU for the most part, and like Lou Reed more than the average PRF member from what I've gathered, but that was a very miserable performance to offer a comparison to. It's just junkie-slop.

I'm guessing you need to do a bit more research as to how "unhinged" The Who could be in their heyday.

I dunno. Live, there's some awesome unhinged playing, and I find a lot of his playing exciting.

The Who, on the whole, are not crap. When they were on, they were unstoppable.

I'm an unapologetic Who and Townshend fan, so not crap from me.

Yep, there's two good reasons for a not crap. Toss in some early singles and Who's Next too and you've got a pretty solid set of songs... yep there's a lot in their oeuvre of what most would call filler, but it keeps me entertained, though I don't listen to them nearly as much as I used to. I got to meet John Entwistle in the late 80's and he was a nice guy too.

Townshend may have never thought of himself as a lead player, though I think he holds his own just fine, his ability to use some really complex chords and make the whole thing sound simple is what makes him a great player to me.

I love the early Who songs that capture the proper spirit of the single format.

Once you get to Who's Next I start to lose interest. Just seemed overblown and I have heard those songs too many times when I felt like hearing something else.

A great and indispensable band for their work up to Who's Next.
