Clown music is demonstratably better than objectivist prog.

Nope, that "Objectivist" label is no longer applicable.

Besides, do you really want to compare lyrical content of either band?

Rush is cool, sorry.

To Rush? Any fucking day, yeah.

There are plenty of bands that take themselves seriously to excellent effect. That is not the case with Rush. Rush is a second-rate Yes with a stick up its ass.

Okay, so you don't get prog at all, don't understand Yes either.

And you think Rush takes themselves seriously? They're funnier than Primus, without resorting to playing goofy clown music.

I may have been too subtle with this.

I have some waffles on Primus. They are a stupid band, but they have moments where their shit comes together pleasantly, and I do not begrudge their bro/Phish head hybrid audience the enjoyment of their nonsense.

I have no waffles about Rush. Yes are OK, but my prog tastes tend toward mid '70s King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, maybe a bit of the Canterbury school and some ROI. All deadly serious, by the way (KC may be a waffle, but fairly serious, at least). The reason these bands work has nothing to do with sense of humor because that's not needed to cover up any flaws. The pieces are compositions, not rock songs gussied up with unneeded ornamentation. Complexity serves the composition rather than being tacked on in a highly mannered way.

Rush just takes rock music, sucks all the party out of it and replaces it with delusions of grandeur. Fuck that. Fuck that for the same reason that rococo was the worst period of what most people call classical music.

You and me both, man.

I didn't see these, but I remember my dad mentioning that he saw Primus open for Rush not once, but twice! Apparently he wasn't into it at all the first time, so when he saw them two years later or whatever opening for them again, it was "Oh fuck, not these fucking guys again."

You could not pay me to sit through a Primus set before a Rush set. I would leave and eat $10 nachos before I did that.

I'm not sure why you have such a deep hatred for a band that you don't have to listen to, but it's making you sound sort of crazy here.

Rush are iconic of everything I think can be done wrong in rock, and it is fun to engage in hyperbole. Hatred is pointless and I am a happy guy.

But the question stands: What is the worst period of what most people call classical music?

The period just after someone uses what most people call classical music as a benchmark to compare to soulless guitar-god wankery or prog-metal-weiner dipshittery.

Yep, Rococo sucked out the wild party that was 4-part fugues, strict counterpoint, liturgical cantata, etc... right out of the Baroque. That was some hearty party, but then the stoics of the Galant and Empfindsamer Stil had to come along and ruin the party with their Sonatinas and Fantasias and free development and chromatic modulation.

To the point of topic:

I've been fans of both groups at one time or another. Both have had moments of brilliance and moments of execrable nonsense - often in the same song.

Both are music for adolescents, sophomores, and sonderlings, and should not be taken seriously in any sense by real adults.

That's why this is so fun, because they're so close! Rush vs. Tool would be almost impossible.

And I would say that the rococo lost the meaningful complexity of the baroque and substituted foolish decorations for it. Rush lost both the literal "party" of rock music being fun as well as the figurative party of their forebears in prog, fusion and more complex rock in general, whose playing of difficult parts served a purpose. Rush are the forebears of the "yeah well check this out bet you can't shred like this" Shrapnel records mentality.

Also I'm aware that baroque performance practice often involved a lot of showy improvisation, etc. Wasn't going for an exact metaphor.

There is one Rush song I like--"The Working Man." That's a lot more than I can say for Primus, who I described on here once, I think, as Rush for the "alternative rock" set. I'll stand by that. I do not like Rush--and used to despise them (but don't now, thanks to "Beyond the Lighted Stage"), but I never thought of Rush as novelty music, unlike Primus.

Rush.

I've been listening to a few favourite cuts from the second Primus record to check if a re-evaluation is in order, and it isn't. I don't hear any Rush, starting with the fact that the drummer usually has an actual groove going there. Things got stale not long after this, but they still had it here:

If you don't want a Killdozer cover of Closer To The Heart, you ate lead paint as a child.

Les Claypool is a legitimately odd duck, just a too quirky and not enough charisma to be a frontman. Primus is aight, just not for me

EDIT : And I'm a KISS fan, so you know. I drank the entire gallon of lead paint. But they completely suck. I set the bar low for myself. Rush on the other hand set the bar high for themselves but fall to the earth like the cliched and deluded Icarus they are. But I prefer my cliches wrapped in obviously ridiculous cheese.
