Surprisingly this hasn't been done before (or I'm a complete spazz when it comes to the search function):
Ocrilim / Octis / Orthrelm / any-other-Mick-Barr-project.
(I guess "band" might be somewhat of a misnomer.)

Nah, not really - all those posts are from 2004, the first Ocrilim CD wasn't even out then.

I like what Orthrelm tries to do, more than how they do it. The absolutely spastic, aggressive playing is pretty good, but the fact that they don't let up, or write a song any differently than what they've done before is massive waffles.

Not crap, but I don't want to hear it for more than ten minutes.

Mick Barr is getting a project going all by his lonesome.

If you like Orthrelm you definitely should check out Micks other work. I believe he has a band camp site. I feel lucky to have seen him play as often as I have.

I like that Nondor releases records that come with patches
Is there a Nondor Nevai thread?

Who's bought the Barr/Shea/Dahl cd? Good stuff.

No, I only found one mention of Nondor on EA, made by a poster who doesn't use their account any more. I'm doing a noisecore album with N.N. this summer. Here's a sample of what it will sound like, sans guitar.

Has anyone picked up the Orthrelm semi-discog CD on Ug-Explode? I think the whole thing was remixed and remastered by Colin Marston, and sounds aeons better than it used to, totally worth getting. Tip: look for that record (and other titles from the label) on the Stickfigure distro discogs page.

Thanks for the heads-up - can you provide links?

I've bought quite a few of the self-released Ocrilim CD-Rs from Mick directly plus the brilliant 3xLP box set on the recommendation of FM skoz. Between that, Krallice and streaming from http://ocrilim.bandcamp.com/ I'd say my Barrian needs are pretty well met. ;-) I never really got into Orthrelm the way I got into Ocrilim/Octis.

Only one track here, but you'll get the idea:

I've been itching to get the Oldest LP, but shipping from the U.S. is prohibitive right now, waiting for a cheap european copy to pop up on discogs.

My first instinct is to say that he's rubbish.

But I would like to hear him do an album with the The Master Musicians of Jajouka.

Yeah the comp cd sounds great. I probably have 90% of Micks stuff he's very talented and a great guy. I like all the Orthrelm stuff but think OV is a pretty monumental achievement. Josh Blairs work is particularly great on that record. If you haven't given it serious time you should.

What difference there is between Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and other wanky guitarrists and Mick Barr? None. And that why is so puzzling that I like him so much. He seems pretty self-aware of himself and his music and it's problems, that makes him more endearing. And I really admire that he goes head-first towards what he wants to hear and doesn't give a fuck if you like it or not, you can see that even in the record covers.

Seems like the popular shred guitarists mentioned still have fairly palatable backing tracks as a foundation for their shredfests. Mick strips all of that away and just goes for it, kinda like an abstract painter who could very easily paint portraits but simply has no interest.

I found a used copy of the 100 small 'songs' rec. It's a novelty, but a fun one.
