I seriously think it'll be the best one since Fabulous Muscles, and it's pretty much the first time I've ever thought that about a new Xiu Xiu record since I started paying attention. It sounds like it'll be a return to, and reclamation of, the diseased self-loathing on the first two records, except it's going to be even more electronic. There's not going to be any guitar on this record.

Yeah, except he sings like Crappy Dracula on that new one. Song is garbage now that I've heard it thrice.

Totally. I think I cribbed it from Rasmussen or J Burns, though.

- Well, it's not really about sex, it's about desire, the thrill of being posessed. And the video, well, I don't want to be pretentious, it's really a tangent, to which the music can grow, that's why we represent ourselves as we really are. The queer elements aren't really that important, is about that dark time in my life. The music is trying to get many elements together, but really, we are trying to get an atmosphere of what is really like to be human and...

- How does it sounds, really?

- Well, like a shitty emo song with superficially wacky tempo changes and a bunch of shit thrown arround.

Music for college kids that read way too much Dennis Cooper and his blog. CRAP.

P.D: I like Dennis Cooper a lot and some Xiu Xiu songs are Ok.

The only Xiu Xiu show I've seen was their Pitchfork performance, and I didn't dig it. It could have been because of numerous factors: crowd, outdoors, sound, Pitchfork, but yeah, going by that sole performance I would have been turned-off from exploring his work. That said, I enjoy his work very much. When you have some spare time, and if you feel like digging, I recommend a compilation release from his previous band, 10 In The Swear Jar, called, Accordian Solo!. I'm sure you'd dig it. Weird pop songs that aren't as fucked as some of the Xiu Xiu material, but a couple he decided to recycle (and fuck) as Xiu Xiu. Good stuff.

Yeah, I can.

They got on stage behind a couple of picnic tables full of stuff connected by midi cords and the Lady played 16th notes on a snare drum for 35 whole goddamned minutes while the guy shoved a 58 into his mouth and made pouty little goth sounds over some white noise and an occasional blast of what sounded like SMPTE time code. Every once and a while they would smack a crash cymbal... A LOT! They each had a crash cymbal to occasionally smack a lot. He would do these little geisha dances and when he sang, he spit more than anyone else I have ever seen spit while singing live. People got wet. At one point he was going "mraaaw mraaaw mraaaw" in a super low crybaby voice (as he did on every single song) but he would break into these high pitched barking/yelping sounds. Heather turned to me and said "It's about his puppy, I think it was killed or something." and I started laughing uncontrollably. The music came to an abrupt halt and the only sound left in the room was me laughing at Heathers joke. It was the best part of the show. The second best part was when he said "I hope I don't mess this song up." before he started a "song". I still cannot tell you if he did or not. I just don't know. Maybe he had a bad monitor mix or something, I've heard that can make bands play a rough show. I bet maybe not.

I saw Xiu Xiu in 2012 and had a blast. Duo, some of their older stuff had to be stripped down. Jamie broke two strings and had to change them. There's a picture of Morrissey in his guitar case. Closed with an encore of "Frankie Teardrop" and Jamie seemed to be having fun with it.

Saw them again in 2014 after Jamie's major depression where he just played harsh noise on a synth the whole set. Enjoyed that a little less, but I didn't pay to get in (thanks FM SecondEdition!) and it was cool to watch Lincoln Hall squirm.

Incredibly original band. That's been used to their detriment (critiques along the lines of "a sample of a dishwasher's hum run through distortion for 4 minutes") but I don't think they're playing to any sort of crowd. Jamie does what he does and you either get into it or hate it. I think dude's gone through some hard times and his songs are soaked in that, but he's been pretty transparent about Xiu Xiu's "3 a.m. home alone from the club and sad" vibe.
Kerouacian as fuck.

Just curious... what type of arrangement would y'all like to see Xiu Xiu play live with...

Some of the music is just scary. Not sure what to think even about some of it.

I agree, the guys in Crappy Dracula are pretty damn funny, their banter is often better than their songs (which are pretty good/funny) but a lot of people do not get the joke. Which is about 60% Flipper and 40% Dead Milkmen.

Saw him do the solo noise thing opening for Swans. Would have much preferred to hear him do something else. I like "Suha" a lot.

Xiu Xiu is on tour. I’m producing a show about them tonight from 9pm ET to midnight. It’ll include most of Girl With Basket of Fruit and good earlier music, an adjacent band or two, and some light Q&A with Jamie Stewart. It’s on WXYC, so wxyc.org or 89.3 in the Paris of the Piedmont.

I saw that too. It's funny, the venue I was at had windows, and during his set I saw a firetruck with its lights going off outside. I was like, "heh, maybe someone thought the fire alarm went off."

I also saw him open for Swans on The Seer tour - just him seated, surrounded by a bunch of instruments. This was a much better performance, and intense - it was like watching someone confess to a therapist.
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."
