starting a sentence with the word "anymore"

Postby djimbe on Wed Feb 26, 2020 1:38 pm

I work surrounded by people who have no problem starting a sentence with the word "anymore". As in "Anymore, I just don't understand what's wrong with the kids these days".

This is a vocal tick that drives me straight up the wall, and one my wife and I consantly grouse about, to the point it's become a joke with us. She gets on some grammar rant not connected with this subject and all I have to do is say "Anymore, Eve..." and the rant ends in a chuckle.

Many of you lot are far more educated than this dumb ass engineer. What say you?

I'm not a native speaker but have lived here for a while and I've never heard anyone start a sentence with "anymore".

I feel like there's a piece of filmed fiction that's (re-?)popularized this usage recently but I can't put my finger on it. I wanted to say The Favourite but I'm pretty sure that's wrong.

This is the kind of thing I always assumed was a caricature of a regional dialect. Huh.

I'm familiar with this, thought it was maybe a Midwestern thing.

I think it's fine if it's not prefacing old man yells at cloud shit.

i.e. "Anymore, you'd be hard pressed to find a wang this leathery." etc.

Is this "anyway..." that was misheard and now taken on a life of its own?

Kind of like all the people who think that the contraction "would've" is actually "would of"?

Anyway / anyhow it's an annoying verbal tic.

On an english english level, or even a patois uk slang level, "Anymore" sounds ridiculous.

Unusual. I wonder if it's an archaic construction that we mainly don't see anymore.

I'm a little confused. Is it just one person saying it or a few? You single out an engineer at the end.

I work with somebody who ends sentences (over slack, never heard him say it) with "although" rather than "though." eg, "We did the best we could, although."

Anymore, it is what it is, although.

Okay if you're a bursting into a room with a tommy gun and following it up with "you knuckleheads keeps talking shit about The Turk and I'll give you a double-decker of lead for an early supper."

Otherwise it sounds dumb to me.

I don't honestly know where this usage comes from. I certainly never heard it growing up in Illinois. I've heard it from people who were born and raised in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and St. Joe counties in Indiana. These are people with college degrees (mostly engineering disciplines and some with MBA's too), not toothless rubes with a 7th grade education.

It's used instead of "these days", or "recently", or "lately" or some other much more gramatically correct choice. It truely boggles my mind, this usage. I'm heartened that I'm not the only one that thinks it's nuts, and surprised that few have heard this construction. I know my colleagues are largely messed up in their politics, social views, and religious bents, but the language thing is what sets me off more than their conservative Catholic, gay bashing, Trump supporting idiocy.

I am very familiar with it from NW Ohio, so that tracks with the (micro)regional usage.

It's not "grammatically incorrect". Anymore is an adverb. It is just as legitimate as "these days" or "nowadays".

I like it :D
