Oh no -- Pike has to cancel HoF tour for fear of losing toe to diabetes.

Here's to a speedy recover, sir.

Wow. Those were the dates that got pushed back due to a toe surgery back in October. He must be doing really badly.

This does not sit well with me, Pike is a good man. I don't want him sitting down to play like Pig Champion.

A few things occurred to me about this when I heard about this afternoon. Since I don't want to be gloomy, I'm just going to think "Get Well Soon."

Holy shit, you watched the Grammy Awards?! Was it Auto Tune meltdown?

Well, good for High on Fire then. And get well Mr. Pike, because, well, you rule...

I saw a photo of their outfits and a video clip of them going to the stage came up on my FB feed yesterday. 80% of the seats were empty when they walked to the stage. Pike nearly charged toward the stage on his cast and cane. He was like four strides ahead of his bandmates when he got to the mic. I imagine when most of your career has been in the opposite direction of anything like the Grammy's, and then you win one, it feels cool. Never heard of the other nominees. Any good?

"Wow, what a trip,” said Matt Pike as the band accepted the award. “We never really needed an award for doing what we love. Twenty-one years later, thank you to the Academy.”

While I don't really want to slag the other bands, you wouldn't be missing much if you never wound up hearing them.

It was really good to see Matt looking as good as he did.

One other thing, it was pretty classy to see them mention Nick and Kurt.

With any luck, these guys will get as long of a run as they are interested in.

I never liked Deafheaven much until this year's album. They swapped out a lot of the shoegaze for yacht rock. It worked.

This certainly seems like an unpopular opinion, but I think they should have won the Grammy. Electric Messiah was fine, but Honeycomb was excellent.

I’ve been listening to a ton of Sleep lately, and that’s led me to check out HoF again.

Love the sound, love the riffage, love the vocals, love the performances. . . but something just fails to click for me. Seems like the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Maybe it will also make sense one day, but it doesn’t yet.

Definitely not alone. This constantly vexes me. I even saw them play a few years ago and it was great but their records do nothing for me. On paper they should be right up my alley.

OK, if you browse to dr DOT loudness-war DOT info you'll get a database of albums with their dynamic range. Phpbb strips the link out every time I try to post it.

Oh, good idea! Thanks for doing that.

This database is interesting. Not surprising for the most part - At Action Park has a lot of dynamic range, well I'll be damned.

Damn, eh. That explains a lot. Every album without exception. This database is great. I just searched a bunch of bands and haven't found any other discography that's as compressed as the HoF catalog. Brutal.

I got hooked at Blessed Black Wings (the Albini-recorded one), then went backwards, especially The Art of Self Defense, then went forwards. I never picked up the latest one, and the one before that seemed weak, but De Vermis Mysteriis is great and I listened to Death Is This Communion lots too.

Tough act to follow, especially at dinner time in Holland. Blessed Black Wings is great. Mr. Pike is back to using Orange amps. He was using Blackstar amps when I saw them a while ago. Glad I saw them in a small crowded club first years ago. Les Pauls are GO!
