Two of his albums, Homosapien and XL-1, are not crap -- great hard-edged early-'80s synth-pop, if not quite up to the Buzzcocks. He did a few other solo records but I haven't heard them.

"Homosapien" live.

Perhaps because it is not crap? ...For post-Buzzcocks output I prefer these two records to Magazine's. Heresy? Pff. Magazine did the beloved "Song From Under The Floorboards" but other than that I found them somewhat disappointing.

My first show at Metro was seeing Pete Shelley supporting his Heaven and the Sea record. No one was there. A totally empty metro in 1986. I still like that record, just for nostalgia's sake... I need to break it out again and see if it's not too horrible.

Neither of these two records are better than "Real Life". They're fluff. Hey, I like them too but it's really no contest.

Now, if you want to compare "Heaven and the Sea" to "Jerky Versions of a Dream", there you might have a horserace.

It'd be "Jerky Versions..." by the way.

We really need a "Would you have...Pete Shelley vs Howard Devoto" thead for the edification of our more homosexual forum members.

Not crap on the original question.

To me, the qualities that "fluff" implies are not necessarily bad ones. (Anyway those two Shelley records are no "fluffier" than the Buzzcocks' were, and surely the Buzzcocks' merit is not in question.) I'll often take high-quality "fluff" over mediocre "seriousness" anyway.

I own XL-1. I can't remember much about it at all apart from the song Telephone Operator and it came with a computer program.

I've just found it after a big search. The computer program was a track that you had to record to cassette and play on a ZX spectrum. Took me ages to sort it out and it had the album lyrics on it. Radical.

You can download it here: http://www.headen.com/newpage12.htm

No idea if it works. Think you'll need a spectrum emulator or something technical like that.

Listening to the album again, there are two things I notice.

It's crap.

I should sort out my records.
