Metal Gear Solid V gets better the more I play it. Its learning curve and its difficulty curve are so precisely tuned, and there's something extremely satisfying about going back and revisiting previously played missions with new gadgets and techniques and figuring out entirely different ways to accomplish them. Tons of little lateral thinking "Can I do this?" moments the game doesn't drop any hints to that get answered with a big, grinning "Yes." A lot of little gripes here and there but the moment-to-moment gameplay is phenomenal.

If you've ever played a military shooter and thought "That was really good, but I wished it seriously f'ed with my head more..." Spec Ops: The Line is up for free on Humble Bundle for a couple days.

Just downloaded the X-Com 2: Terror From the Deep (from the original 90's series). I used to play in high school and was happy to see it on steam. Jesus is that game hard. Fun but one of the most aggravating games I've played in a long time.

Now a part of me will never accept the SNES being called "old school" because I remember when the SNES was considered "next gen". To me old schoolness will always be the 6581 SID chip - that's a big part of why I wanted to get a c64. It's pretty much the first audio chip that didn't sound shitty. Designed by Bob Yannes! He then went on to found Ensoniq and create the Mirage sampling keyboard.

Your comment made me look up the SNES sound chip though, and that's very interesting too. I did not know that the SNES sound chip was designed by Ken Kutaragi. Future CEO of SCEI (Sony games division), the man they call "the father of the Playstation", THAT Ken Kutaragi.

The N64 meanwhile apparently doesn't even have a sound chip and made you do everything with the processor. This means that while F-Zero X was busy pushing the processor to maintain 60 FPS, they also had to find some spare processor time to generate the music with.

I have such mixed feelings about this. One the one hand it is so unbearably "Lad's Mag". Tough sexy mercenary! Naked titties! Gratuitous swearing!

On the other hand, it's Cyberpunk. I've wanted a game based on that since I was 12 and I first got my hands on the pen and paper RPG. And the gameplay looks pretty damn fun.

I very nearly took a job on that some years back. Good people and it looks a great adaptation.

Just been released for Switch and I will probably get it at some point, as I loved FTL, but I have to get on with Hollow Knight and Okami before I buy any new games!

Do get it. It's immaculate. Maybe my favourite turn-based game.

Still playing Dark Souls: Remastered but I feel the burnout setting in.

For Honor has a new patch with a new game mode and characters in October so I'll probably start back up with that again soon.

I have been on a quest for a single player game to scratch a Maniac Mansion itch and I just can't seem to find it....my newest target is Hello Neighbor.

Any play this?

I picked up Hollow Knight too, wasn't really in the mood for that kind of game at the moment and still finishing off Octopath Traveler but it's really grabbed me so far.

I heard bad buggy things about Hello Neighbor but never played it myself. If you're after a Maniac Mansion style game then I'm guessing you must have heard of it but if not, Thimbleweed Park should be up your alley. Made by the same guys, if I recall and it's very good.

I purchased Thimbleweed Park and put it down. Maybe I'll try to revisit. I had high hopes and it was just...too cute...too 'clever'...too 'funny'

I know I'm setting myself up for failure with wanting another 'Maniac Mansion'. The experience I had playing that game just ain't gonna happen again and it isn't fair to expect it to.

How is Octopath Traveler? Have been thinking about that one. Still need to finish Zelda. Going to PAX this weekend, so it'll be interesting to see what's on the way.

Looks and sounds great, battle system is interesting but a two-edged sword as you can't just blast through enemies like Bravely Default/Second and relatively minor battles still need to be thought about a bit. It's repetitive and grindy and the story ranges from bad to okay.

All that said, I've enjoyed it a lot and I'm nearing completing it at 60-odd hours so far. If you like the thought of a grindy old school JRPG you should have a good time but I'd definitely try the demo for this one, it offers a very good idea of what you're in for.

Hope PAX was good!
