This thread has descended into the ridiculous.

I'll bet that someone says that the Final Destination series are the most disturbing movies in existance. Guffaw. Probably not in the way the producers intended.

eerrr, I guess I said it. I guess I've descended into the ridiculous, myself.

Carry on.

I think I had to. For work or something.

I wished I could have been stoned.

BTW I found Irreversible to be an incredibly beautiful film. So much life!

Wow.
"So much life" in Irreversible

Especially the part where the guy gets his skull bashed in with the fire extinguisher. So much life ebbing from him.

Srpski (aka Serbian Film) wins. To quote a colleague of mine: "it makes Salo look like The Sound of Music."

Its offset by a lot of humor, but there are still a couple scenes from Man Bites Dog which stick with me.

The most disturbing "movie" that I know of is a high-quality cell phone or digital camera video, maybe 5 minutes long, of two guys attacking, torturing, and killing a much older guy with a blunt instrument, on no provocation whatsoever, outdoors in a semi-remote area in like 2007. This sort of "went viral" on the web a couple of years ago and I ran across several mentions of it online. I didn't watch it. I don't want to.

Breaking the Waves reduced me to a puddle of tears and snot until the very last shot, which made me furious. Fuck you, Von Trier, you sadist.

I haven't seen Irreversible and don't want to.

Pretty Woman enrages me to this day.

I walked out of Blue Velvet halfway through it in 1985. (I've seen it since and not been bothered.) I just wasn't up for it that day.

I also walked out of a crappy murder mystery/courtroom drama called Jagged Edge around the same time, more because it was such a bad movie. Again, wasn't into it on that particular day.

Salo didn't bother me much. I barely remember it, nine or ten years later. Would watch again.

i haven't seen any of these movies and don't want to watch them. i can't see the 'value' in a movie about raping kids and forcing old dudes to eat shit and fucking girls with pieces of glass and shit.

i have watched two girls one cup, that was kind of hilarious. probably just as deep and compelling as most of the movies listed here.

Excellent movie. That is definitely one of the better independent cult films of the last 10 years.

Perhaps it's not quite disturbing enough to be in this thread though?

Many years ago i used to teach a college film studies course. One year 'shocking cinema' was part of the syllabus so I screened both these films to the 17 year old innocents (you're allowed to ignore ratings for educational purposes).

To my surprise none of them seemed all that bothered by Irreversible. Within 30 minutes or so of Salo however I read the numb expressions on the faces of my students and decided to turn it off. A tense silence followed.

I personally put it down to the different styles the two films adopt. Irreversible, as horrible as it is, is extremely visceral. As a result you can watch these horrible things and feel physical sensations of excitement, adrenalin etc etc. sensations that cinema cashes in on in order to pull in punters. In other words, on one level you can enjoy it.
Salo on the other hand just presents the horror coldly and dispassionately. the camera is usually just sat back watching. Ironically this means the viewer has to engage with the horror of it in a more direct, intellectual way. It is less emotionally manipulative than Irreversible so the viewer has to deal with what they are witnessing alone.
