I haven't been legitimately scared by a piece of music since I was a kid and the world held more secrets. Back then, hearing "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" for the first time was terrifying. The spoken intros in "Number of the Beast" and "Shout at the Devil" were enough to give me nightmares. That Morbid Angel song with the Lovecraftian incantation? Yow! And so on.

Now, the music that really "scares" me is the stuff that has a totality of vision and seemingly endless imagination -- the stuff that, if it didn't exist, someone would have to invent it. I originally thought about leaving this post in the Dead Rider C/NC for just that reason. THAT'S a scary band.

I had this CD:

(Iannis Xenakis - Les Percussions de Strasbourg - Pléïades for future reference)

I had never listened to it. Must have bought it because it was cheap and I knew I liked Mr X. One Sunday morning, hungover, I decided to put it on. Then I crawled back into bed. The experience was so terrifying I never played it again. Beat my tender brain to a pulp.

This song used to scare me as a kid. It's sort weird that this even got commercial radio play, at least it did in Phoenix, Arizona.

The bridge to Knights in White Satin used to scare me too.

Nothing lately.

Funk scared the piss out of me when I was really little, particularly the Parliament album Funkentelechy Vs. The Placebo Syndrome. The voice of Sir Nose D'voidoffunk creeped me out something fierce, what with his freaky-ass voice and claiming that he would never dance. Everyone else chasing him with the bop gun saying that they are going to make him dance with the funk. Then the funk happens. Bootsy all funky, making motherfuckers dance. Sadistic.

The vocoder in "Don't Stop The Music" by Yarbrough and Peoples scared me too. There seemed to have been a theme through 70's funk of an incessant groove that forced you to dance. It weirded me out but ultimately I succumbed to the funk, then to it's more sinister cousin--house music. If I had only seen the puppets in the music video when I was a kid they might have assuaged my fears.

Goddamn, that song is a jam. Grown folks music.

Zbigniew Preisner's music is beautiful and possibly some of the best I have ever heard, but every listen I endure fills me with this overwhelming awareness of my mortality and it ends up becoming a prolonged session of me contemplating how and when exactly I am going to die. Spending enough time in that head space freaks me out sometimes; scares me.

Especially if I'm driving around listening to his compositions. I feel like I'm choosing the music for my own funeral. Needless to say I drive very carefully while listening to Zbigniew.
