Oh, wait, what's that?

Decibel's streaming another new track from the record?

Nice.

Wait. This implies that I've missed one already...

Check the preorder page I noted above.

Telling y'all: those two songs do rule, but they're not even sorta the best stuff on this record.

Here.

Wasn't familiar with Helms Alee, will definitely be buying a copy of Weatherhead now after hearing it. Some very impressive vocals for a metal record...have I ever thought that before, in fact?

Should be here tomorrow. I've avoided the streaming thing for about as long as I can, in order to experience the thing itself, from needle drop to needle lift, in my own place.

Really couldn't ask for better people playing better music.

Guess I should hook up the stereo in my new place tonight.

So I finally checked out this band and bought the first record on a whim after hearing so much praise for them everywhere, including this board. I'm stumped, because so far I really dislike it. It's one notch left of those 'epic' sounding new metally bands, I swear one riff is taken directly from a 311 song or some other such turd.

I will keep trying as so many people with good taste here seem to love them but I'm not hopeful.

Rather than suggest poor taste or damaged hearing on your part, I am just going to suggest you give it another listen.

Still one of the best things going and not even a little bit sounding like 311.

Anyone in NYC find a copy of the LP? Went to other music after work today and they said one copy was in store but it could not be found.

Only one riff sounded like 311, the rest sounds like nu-emo-post-metal beige noise. I like how they write/construct the songs, but the aesthetic style just rubs me the wrong way.

I´m also not yet really feeling it. But that was the same with Night Terror when I heard it the first couple of times. I remember liking the sound and the feel of it first which kept me putting it on, and than the brilliance of the songs kicked in. Something like that.

HELMS ALEE - "8/16" Music Video

A music video for the song "8/16" by Helms Alee, from their new album 'Weatherhead' (Hydra Head Records). It will incorporate Beavis and Butthead-style, hand-drawn animation of the band watching live-action, 90s-style music videos of themselves referencing classic videos by the likes of Metallica, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, MC Hammer, and more. Animation has already begun, and we are planning to shoot the live action video parts in Seattle in August.

Directed by Andrew James Cox, who was also responsible for the Torche - "U.F.O." music video.

I just did an interview with these guys for Metalsucks.

Read it here.

One favorite part:
So am I nuts in seeing you guys as pretty much out there, doing your own thing? I can’t think of any easy comparisons for you.

Ben: We do feed some off things that are closely related to other bands, either in the Seattle area or beyond, but that’s not really a scene or anything. I mean, there’s no mission statement. We’re not trying to be ‘this’ kind of band. And the nice thing about that is that nothings immediately off the table. When we write, that makes almost anything possible. And so the band becomes mishmash that’s a representation of how weird we are. We’re not using some other filter to figure out what we’re doing. I prefer it that way for us. I really think that’s the best way to be in a band and it makes the best music.

Dana: We just want to write the music that comes naturally for us; we want to be able to do whatever we feel like doing. That means taking a look at different moods and different ways of playing music. Sometimes we’ll try something that’s unexpected and that fits into what we’re about as a band. Take a look at the song “Anenome of the Womb” off the most recent record. Ben came in and he just… he just really wanted to play some Spanish guitar. So now we have that song. It’s whatever you’re feeling at the time. And that’s the best way to make art; it’s the most satisfying.

Why? What makes that the best way?

Dana: The whole purpose of art is to do something that makes you happy and fulfilled. The only way to really do that is to be honest about it and not be self-stifling or feel afraid. And that’s especially true in a form of art that you’re going to present to strangers: not being afraid of what you’re doing. Because no matter what you do, someone’s going to think that it sucks. So you just have to go and make what’s honest.

Ben: And really, anything honest isn’t going to fit into a particular scene. I mean, come on: who always feels like Slayer? Those guys… they cry and always don’t always feel like Slayer.

Playing NYC tomorrow night.
