Anybody under 50 who's saved a parking space in Chicago

Postby scott on Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:36 pm

To anybody under 50 who's saved their parking space with a chair or box or whatever... you are a fucking pussy! Yeah, when we got like two feet of snow in '99 or whatever it was, yeah, save your spot then. Whatever. Still lame. But if you've done it this winter, you are just a goddamn fucking pussy. Seriously. So lame.

And the *worst* is the people who continue saving their spot for days, even weeks, even when the snow is pretty much gone. IT'S NOT YOUR FUCKING SPOT JUST BECAUSE YOU SHOVELED IT.

I realize Daley pretty much gave this practice the green light with his statement 10 years ago that if somebody did all that work to dig out a spot and then saved it, he wouldn't mess with it. Daley, who doesn't dig out spots, and who doesn't have to worry about where he's gonna park in the first place.

PUSSIES!!!!

Can we get a critical mass of people together who will, anytime they see a chair or some crap saving a spot, break the chair into pieces and throw it in the garbage? Who's with me??!?!

Apologies to actual vaginas, which I don't mean to demean here. Just can't think of a better word for these people.

This is a practice that puzzles me about Chicago. For fuck's sake, the roads aren't private property.

It makes even less sense when a road has designated permit parking.

I don't understand why you'd shovel out a parking spot in the first place.

Color me confused.

So if a guy shovels out a parking space in Chicago, he can save it with a chair or a box? Can't a driver who covets this spot just move the goddamn box, or does this break a law of some kind?

Anyone that shovels anything beyond the bare minimum amount of snow necessary to remove their car from a parking spot deserves to have someone immediately park in the spot as soon as they leave. That's a whole lot of wasted effort.

There is absolutely nothing legal about it. In fact, it's probably illegal to leave your shit out on the road. These people just think they're entitled to the spot. Anyone can toss the chair or whatever and park there, but the asshole that was "laying claim" to the spot will probably cause a stink.

I always assume that if you did this, you'd get a major key job or something. Actually, I've seen it done sadly. This is why I rarely drive in the Winter... Public transportation is where it's at!

I have never done it but it makes sense to me.

The person is saying 'I have decided this is my spot, if you feel you have the balls to move my chairs go ahead, see what happens' Everyone knows that if you touch someone's chairs there will be big trouble, most likely a fistfight in the street.

I like that sort of thing.

I mean, it takes a lot of 'Fuck you' to do this. Just an insanely 'Fuck all y'all' move in every way. 'I am sick of the bullshit, I am claiming this patch of land and I will fight anyone who fucks with it. All you motherfuckers just try me'

One of my friends came in from out of town and came up to my apartment. I asked him if he had trouble finding parking since there was snow.
'No, there was a spot right out front. People are too lazy to get out and move a couple lawn chairs that were blocking it, I guess'

Oh man, the lunatic Albanians next door were already out there getting ready to smash his windows with a stick by the time we ran back down to move it.

my landlord will do this occasionally when the snow is really bad. only for a day or so. the way i see it, if i shovel out my spot, and you shovel out yours, and on and on and on, then they're all shoveled, and we park where ever the fuck we want. i do have the four wheel drive though, so i don't really have to worry about this crap. i don't know that i would move a chair though. it's tough. i've seen shit happen.

i had a bizzare thing happen to me a few weeks ago (during the first snow storm where it took everybody 9 hours to get home) - i got home from work and shoveled my spot out, really did a fantastic job...

the next morning i woke up, got in my car and went for a drive...

came back and somebody was parked in my spot. oh well. parked down the street.

the next morning i went out for a drive and came back and found the spot in front of my house open!

WITH A CHAIR PLACED IN IT!

WTF?

i got out of my car, flung the chair onto the sidewalk and parked there.

i have no idea who did that, but what an idiot. i mean, this spot is directly in front of my house. i thought that proper protocol for the chair thing was only in the spot directly in front of your house. whatever, fuck that. i've lived in this city my entire life and i do not understand it.

throw the shit in the lawn and find another spot. works for me.

it's especially retarded around here because there's plenty of parking, just maybe not right in front of your house. if you're that fucking pathetic, go the extra mile and get one of those phony handicapped reserved spots like all the fat fucks on my old street did.

I leave my royalty checks from my time in The Atlanta Rhythm Section in my parking space.

People know not to fuck with my spot.

A thought: Rather than throwing the chair or whatever out of the way and parking in the spot, it'd be a better form of revenge to shovel in a foot or so of snow back into the parking spot.

I've had many people from out of town tell me what assholes your average walking-down-the-street-downtown Chicagoans can be. Maybe, maybe not.

Like pushing people out of the way at a bus stop or making fun of the homeless, using trash to mark your spot is a pretty good indication that you are one of these Chicago assholes.
