Does anybody here shave with a safety razor?

Postby elisha wiesner on Mon Jun 01, 2009 6:07 pm

Have you seen the price of fucking razor blades? it's crazy. i am thinking about getting a safety razor. you can get like 100 blades for the price of 5 mach 3 cartridges. does anybody use one? how well do they work?

Funny you ask, I just bought a big bag of two-blade safety razors after a couple of years using one of the four-blade refillables. I have to shave with an electric unless my skin has had two full days off, so that means I only shave with a blade after my days off. It was like $14.99 for five cartridges (Plus Two Free!), and I just said screw it. I just shave a little slower and use more balm after.

bunch of discussion popped up about it in this thread, which caused me to buy a Merkur HD two weeks ago. I'm still on the shit end of its incredibly steep learning curve, most shaves so far have resulted in nicks and less than completely shaven spots that I have to clean up with a cartridge razor. The learning curve is FUCKING STEEP. I keep hearing though that once you master it, it is as good or better than a Mach 3.

i used to-- but i'm so freakin' lazy about shaving that i let it go a few days, and the dago stubble gets so long, i clog the damn thing. every stroke.

sigh.

if i shaved every day, like some kind of professional... i'd do it. but i suck, and i work in construction, so fuggit... i use a sensor.

i made a brief foray into straight razors... that didn't end well, but at least i can still speak...

I've used mine a grand total of twice. The second time was better.

Fuck mach 3s.

If I only shaved every four days, I'd probably do the same, because learning how to use a safety razor is difficult. In terms of power and deadliness, these things make Mach 3's look like playschool toys. With a Mach 3, it felt like I'd have to actively try to nick myself in order to draw blood, but with my safety razor, seems like I'll get nicked for just looking at it the wrong way.

Still, if you shave every day, 15cents a blade for 4-5 good shaves per blade is a hell of a lot better than the Mach 3 economics, and with some skill, there are really good shaves to be had with them. (Or so I keep hearing, as I mutilate my face every morning.)

Once the income stream is turned back on to close to 100%, I think I am going to ditch disposables altogether and buy this one....

It's more than the Merkur, but IMO it looks more like something I should own.

I love my Merkur. I've had it for over a year. There is a learners curve but the reward is great. No more ingrown hairs, better feeling shave, much lower cost on high-quality blades. Here's a little tip: I use a sanitizer/antibacterial gel on the blades before every shave. A good brush and shave cream/soap are also part of the ritual.

I also bought a Murkur on the advice of Tim M and it was a sound purchase. Replacement blades are a pittance and you only need new ones every so often.

Feather Blades + Merkur Futur Safety Razor + Billy Jealousy Hydroplane (Silicone) Shave Gel= The best fucking shave ever. I'm serious. Trust me here. I've tried just about everything. The Hydroplane Shave gel is $$$ but stilll worth it.

I bought a Merkur a while ago. I tried it for a couple of weeks, and I just could not get a good shave with it. I would up selling it and going back to the disposables. The techniques I learned whilst trying to get the safety razor to work have paid off huge.

My secret is two passes - one time with the grain, rinse, then reload with shave cream (from a tube, not a can) and one light pass against the grain. Great shave. And with the Mach 3s, no nicks or slices. No ingrown hairs. The blades are expensive, but I can get a week out of one blade, and they cost about a buck apiece online, so I figure $1 a week is OK by me.

thanks for the info.

i have a gillette safety razor, i think the model is super speed. i'm going to get some blades and try it out.

for me i don't think it's really about the $75-100/year that i have to spend on cartridges but more that i just feel totally ripped off every time i buy them.

Exactly. I cringe every time I have to pay $9-10 for a four pack of Mach 3 blades. I figured that even buying them at Sams/BJ's it costs me around $120 a year for blades. Even the nicest DE blades would cost about $50 per year instead.

I'm fully Merkur Futur, Nancy Boy shaving cream with a Truefitt & Hill badger hair shaving brush. My only issue is that I often have trouble getting the whiskers just below my nose. Any tips?
