So now we simply need a constitutional amendment that says that corporations do not have the same rights as people.

It is already raining outside. Did you have to make the day more gloomy?

I have nothing intelligent to say about this decision. My thoughts would just spill out in an emotional mess. Suffice to say, I don't like it. Not one bit. Nope, not at all.

It's getting to the point where I miss those halcyon days of five years ago, when I thought shit couldn't get any worse in the US.

This is the absolute opposite of progress. In fact, banning all corporate money might be the only thing that would keep representative democracy's Doomsday Clock from racing toward midnight.

One thing I'm not getting: If corporations are "people" and money is "speech", why do real people still have their "speech" limited to $2400?

I heard Newt Gingrich on NPR today, arguing that this is a great victory for the middle class and their right to free speech, while completely ignoring questions on whether this will just enable corporations to more easily steamroll their interests over those (meaning, the average American person) with shallower pockets.

Interesting background on some of the early work of the bench's awesome new majority on this.

Fun to note that one of the cases that helped them bolster the money=speech argument was brought by a well-funded NY democrat.

Ha ha! Newt Gingrich is talking to the middle class as though they will still exist in his world!

Oh my but we are fucked.

The only way this works is if the concept of *equal time* is reinstated.

If Dow and Monsanto want to pour a half-billion into undermining climate change and environmental policy and opposing those who back it, then they should be forced to pay for the exact same amount of time for a competing viewpoint to be expressed over the same media in similar time slots.

This is a fucking horrible decision, both in policy and in terms of its actual legal history, and I'm entirely too angry to say much more on it besides...

1) perhaps we should interpret this decision as the ultimate victory of postmodernism

2) we should come to terms with the fact that we live in a burgeoning cyberpunk dystopia and act accordingly.

That's precisely what Olbermann said tonight in a histrionic Special Comment that i found myself in despairing agreement with.

I can't take Olbermann, regardless of the content. I like this though:

connor wrote:
I like how he starts with Dred Scott. It got me thinking: we (liberals/leftists) should resurrect the term "abolitionist" to mean "in favor of abolishing corporate power."

I genuinely think that this is a good idea.

Ha, that's exactly what went through my head. "Wow, Olbermann's in rare hyperbolic form here. He should really get a grip. Oh, wait, i completely agree with him. Guess i'm not sleeping tonight."

What I am really not getting is this:

Some people on the 'right' are saying this is a victory, that it will hurt rich incumbents, and will help an average Joe get elected and somehow levels the playing field.

I've yet to understand exactly how this ruling does this.
