Underrated or Underappreciated Drummers

Postby SecondEdition on Fri May 07, 2010 11:03 am

Not necessarily your favorite drummers. Just drummers who you don't think get much respect and need more of.

Me? I think Ted's drumming on those old Dead Kennedys records was absolutely fantastic. Sure Peligro wiped the floor with him technically, but Fresh Fruit... and related material had such an unbelievably demented and enjoyable rhythmic swing, and Peligro never did impart that same kind of quality to the band, as brilliant as he was and still is.

Your picks?

(Edit: Since this has turned into a thread spotlighting indisputably awesome drummers most people have never heard of - for example, Charles Hayward, etc. - as well as drummers who really don't get enough respect as musicians - for example, Ringo, etc. - I decided to revise the thread title to reflect that change. Carry on.)

Will Rigby of the dB's. He and Gene Holder constitute one of the most underrated rhythm sections of all time.

Phil Rudd.

I will be wearing my home-made "Phil Rudd Appreciation Society" t-shirt at the PRF BBQ this year, so it will be easy to single me out and make fun of my appreciation of a dead-solid 4/4 if you're so inclined.

Yes. At least up until Deguello, after that things got a bit odd. The shuffle at the end of El Diablo is top notch, Michelin-starred drumming.

Yes to Phil Rudd also.

definitely bob bert, my favorite of all sy drummers. gets overshadowed by what a great and inventive drummer steve shelley is, but bert had something special and unique, brutal and caveman-like yet strangely ethereal.

bill ward. his textural bashing was black sabbaths secret weapon. not to diminish the other three, but picture iron man, for example, with some normal rock guy drumming.

lawrence tolhurst. for a shitty drummer he was sure a great fucking drummer. the cure never sounded as good once they got someone competent on drums and stuck drunk old lol on silent keyboard and "other instrument."

moe tucker is not widely considered as the best rock n roll drummer ever. something is wrong with that.

steve morris rules. outside of this forum i never hear anyone say that.

i dont think mike kinsella is underrated. he gets enough head probably. he's great though.

i say:
+T.W. Walsh
+whoever plays on; shannon wright's 'over the sun'
+the drummer from mewithoutyou has some interesting moves too. i like it.
+Simone from Blonde Redhead (not sure how many people recognize his mastery)

and of course ROLAND can never get enough love. (har har)

Gotta agree on Phil Rudd and Frank Beard, though what Frank Beard has become is not underrated at all.

Klaus Schulze was a pretty sick drummer. Listen to the jam Amboss on the first Ash Ra album.

I never feel like Billy Cobham gets his due, though that may be because I don't hang around many people who listen to Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Danny Arnold Lommen had some pretty sick drumming with Gore and Caspar Brotzmann that I never hear get much praise.

Sam Henry and Brad Naish's drumming with the Wipers is pretty perfect, too.

Jerry Fuchs.

Mario Rubalcaba – Earthless. Also saw him sit in for Mascis with Witch on the west coast.
Chris Haikus - Sleep, Om, Asbestosdeath.
Alfredo Hernandez - Kyuss, QOTSA, Yawning Man, Gusto. Seen him a few times with Neider and Dinsmore live as Gusto and he was killing it, but he just isn't playing much anymore.

these are all drummers I like. Lol Tolhurst is the one drummer I can think of whose drumming regularly gets mistaken for drum machines. He almost never, ever plays a fill on Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography unless it's overdubbed. insane.
