Nice memorial Steve.

I especially appreciate that you contacted his family for their blessing.
That is a class move.

thanks steve. thanks for being receptive to john and the greatness within him, and thanks for being articulate enough to express what you saw.

and thanks to John for being such a bad ass, and coming here and letting us know him just a little bit before it was time to go.

the courage of that man, the fucking balls of that man not to curl in a ball and whine about how its not fair.

here it is 8:45am on a Sunday and I am all misted up again.

Man, I missed everything being so caught up in whatever it is I was doing, and this makes me regret it.

It was a very moving essay. I wish I'd given more time and more of my own limited resources to this guy and his project than I did when it mattered.

Still, kudos for being memorialized, and being immortalized in creative work.

You're hardly alone there, there's a sodden wad of tissues next to the laptop after I suggested my girlfriend might like to read it a few minutes ago. A beautiful and genuinely moving tribute. I've not been able to put it out of my mind since reading it first thing this morning.

I have so much to say, and, yet, I have no clue what to say.

I started reading John's story, here, on the PRF, shortly before my own diagnosis. His attitude and honesty resonated with my deep conviction of how I had to confront my own cancer, and deal with treatment. Even, as, at times, it seemed reckless, and frightening to my family and friends. His encouragement both on Facebook, where we became "Friends" just a few weeks before he passed, and here, through posting on the "Cancer" thread, encouraged me to not let Cancer take away my most cherished activities, those I felt had made me who I am.

And, Steve, the gesture that you, Todd, and Bob, made towards me and my wife, while I lay in the ICU, on the middle of your West Coast tour, reinforced that same conviction. While those closest to me feared I would die, I KNEW that I'd come to far to let this beat me.

Thank you for posting this. It's as beautiful, and honest a tribute, as John deserved.

And Thank You, for continuing (this Tribute is proof of it), to be the example of honesty, integrity, humility, and humanity, that Punk Rock told us it was supposed to be about.

Very well written and captures what PRF found most special about him. Never got to meet John but he definitely sets an example to remind us to push against our own walls and create something.

I don't think it needs anything else.

In the sense that your writing speaks of giving a community to the isolated - do you think it might be worth adding a link to some kind of cancer support community? I guess it might be difficult to select the right one from the outside.
Not to be a band-aid to the conscience, but someone moved by the writing might appreciate something to do "now" - a link to donate to something JG3's family want supported perhaps.
Mundane suggestions but it's a stirring read, and it might translate more easily into worthwhile action if the next step is obvious.

"Tomorrow. I am thinking about tomorrow."

Damn. That's profoundly moving. I never fail to be blown away by his strength.

Steve, I want to thank you for waking me up to this new perspective on recognizing signs of a life well-lived. To be honest, it had never occurred to me before. I always figured that I needed to get my ducks in a row and had some small nagging sense of dread when I considered what it might be like to go through my effects after I'm gone. Initially I did see the unfinished Teeth album as a sign of incompleteness. And as appealing as it might be to have great players pull it together, it still struck me as bittersweet. But I'm pretty convinced that if that album had been completed that John would have immediately started another one. And more of his heroes would have been brought in to the process. He was endless in that regard. And thinking about him and his work in this way puts a real smile on my face. Thanks for that. I wouldn't change a thing about the memorial.

I made the mistake of reading that while at work, and sure enough, I got choked up. This is a very accurate take on how John's experience affected many of us.

I don't know if it's an option, but it might be cool to have a song from The Strain play on the page, or a clip of the song, or at least a link to one of the songs. It just seems fitting since his music was so central to his purpose.

And again, thanks for this, Steve.

I don't have much to add other that full-throated support for this project and for John's perspective on his last days. Few people really rise to the level of heroic, but Grabski did.
