Good films directed by women

Postby famousjunkie on Tue Mar 26, 2013 7:35 pm

I've been watching a ton of movies lately and it's allowed me to get a grasp of the medium I've never had before (meaning I'm coming to like some movies I thought were boring when I was younger and so on).

Anyway, I have an embarrassing lack of female directors in my collection and would love to fix that. Searching Google for top female lists has yielded a lot of big budget stuff, which can be fine, but I'm hoping there is some cool, crazy experimental stuff out there as well.

Any suggestions?

Jesus. Search "Decline of Western Civilization" It's a Penelope Spheeris film. Don't snooze on The Metal Years.

Women are underrepresented as directors and 80-90% of film boards are male users/never discuss films made by women. I'm sorry if it seems offensive.

Will do.

You should watch some of Agnes Varda's films.

Ida Lupino made a bunch of movies in the 50s including a noir called Hitch Hiker.

I like the two movies by Julia Loktev that I've seen.

Hell, I'm pretty sure Mary Harron directed I Shot Andy Warhol and American Psycho.

You've probably done some of this without even trying.

Lynne Ramsay's Ratcatcher is fantastic. Can't forget Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break!

Alison Anders. I think a woman directed CB4. Sofia Coppola has directed films you've probably seen.

Anything by Alice Guy-Blaché, one of the pioneers of cinema. Also, this excellent documentary interviews several fascinating, lesser known lady filmmakers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Directors

Yeah, Alice Guy-Blaché is pretty awesome. Dorothy Arzner, too. Will check out this documentary.

Maya Deren is a good director to watch if you like experimental films.

By Lina Wertmuller.

Guy Ritchie's remake, starring Madonna, is total crap, but the original movie is 100% gold.

Brief Crossing is probably my favorite film by Breillat. Of the few I've seen, that one really hit me.
