I'm weirdly taken with blockchain currency technology right now. I feel like it's one of those things that's totally weirdos only now and is going to be everywhere in 20 years.

I recently read about an Icelandic micropublisher called Tunglio. They only publish books in editions of 69, and only on the night of a full moon. At the end of the night, as the moon wanes, they burn any unsold copies, using first grade French cognac to fuel the flames.

I'm going to obsess over this.

“Our goal has always been to run Tunglið at a moderate loss,” Dagur says. “To do so you naturally have to take chances. Every book that Tunglið publishes is, in a way, an attempt to sink Tunglið, to make it go bankrupt. It’s thrilling."

That is some next level artificial scarcity.

Programmable guitar pedals. Somebody has asked me if I can help port a VST they like over onto one. Seems achievable enough...

Huh. You would think that would be a thing by now.

It is a thing by now. It's a completely new thing to me though, and so is compiling VSTs.

But the VST is open source C++ and the pedal has C++ libraries too so it should be mostly a matter of putting tab A into slot B once I figure out a. what the deal is with the VST libraries and b. what the deal is with the pedal libraries.

The idea that you can roll your own guitar effects out of C++ code is pretty outrageous though. This could be a fun thing.

I guess you could use one of those things that runs VSTs directly by sticking your phone into it or whatever, but this is a programmable pedal with a much simpler DSP in it:

Not exactly cheap! He really, really wants the functionality of this particular VST in guitar pedal form.

See, that's probably more what I meant to say. There has to be a market for a pedal format that would allow what he is talking about.

Well this almost sorta does do that, but it's not quite as simple as just dropping it in. From what I can ascertain there are certain advantages to doing things this way, like not having a big complicated operating system that needs booting up, and lower latency. Latency has got to be the biggest problem for this sort of thing I expect as it doesn't take much before it becomes noticeable.

There's also not much memory available and strict limits on how many instructions you can perform per sample.

Oh and yeah apparently there are dedicated VST hosts but they're more like big blinky computerbox things and he's already got this pedal thing.

Then there is this guy: http://robertsonics.com/carina/

Well, that pedal is an absolute piece of piss to write patches for. You can compile them online on their web page. I did the simplest thing imaginable to start with, and made a gain knob.

Code: Select all
#ifndef __DumbGain_hpp__
#define __DumbGain_hpp__

#include "Patch.h"

class DumbGain: public Patch {
public:
   float gain;
   float* sampleBuffer[2];

    DumbGain(){
        registerParameter(PARAMETER_A, "Gain");
        registerParameter(PARAMETER_B, "");
        registerParameter(PARAMETER_C, "");
        registerParameter(PARAMETER_D, "");
    }

    void processAudio(AudioBuffer &buffer){
       gain = getParameterValue(PARAMETER_A) * 20; //x20  gain
       float numChan = min(buffer.getChannels(), 2);

        for(int c = 0; c < numChan; c++)
        {
            sampleBuffer[c] = buffer.getSamples(c);
        }

        int size = buffer.getSize();
        for(int i=0; i<size; i++)
        {
            for(int c = 0; c < numChan; c++)
            {
                sampleBuffer[c][i] *= gain;
            }
        }
    }
};

#endif

You paste that into the window on their webpage, hit compile and that's all there is to it.

I do this with a Raspberry Pi and AudioInjector HAT. You could fit it in a pedal sized enclosure:

I'm mostly running Pure Data patches but it could be set up to just load a chain of plugin effects instead.

If you have the source for the VST you trying to port it would be pretty straightforward to make it run on this. If you are trying to host a precompiled for Windows VST you are probably out of luck.

I have the source for the VST, and he has this Owl pedal already. It looks like it's going to be no trouble at all. Easy.

That Pi with audio hat looks nice tho. That looks like something I'd be keen to get for myself.

I bought this coffee mug from Goodwill a while back for a dollar or something and its become my favorite mug. It's dark green and has pink cows, chickens, and pigs in rows circling the outside. It keeps my coffee warmer than my other mugs, and I think it looks really cool. Looking at it makes me smile.

The bottom of it says "West Germany" so I assumed it was made sometime before 1990, likely older than me. It's made by Waechtersbach and I guess that's a fairly well known company at least in Germany. Here's what some of them look like.

I haven't ordered any more Waechtersbach mugs yet, but I plan to. I've been looking through the different designs on Ebay, Etsy, etc. like every day. I never thought I'd be fascinated by or find myself getting into collecting mugs. I'm stoked to get more of these.

Vintage electric pencil sharpeners.
They aren't too expensive. I may start collecting them.

Also, tuk tuk automobiles. There are a handful zipping around Brooklyn but they are fairly stripped down and utilitarian.
Some of the ones in Asia are really sharp design wise.
I have no intention to get one. I just like looking at them daily.

Ooh I like those a lot. I have a feeling I'll be knee deep in mugs in about a fortnight.
