Fearsome and Mammoth ITALIAN MUSIC Thread

Postby Major on Mon Jul 31, 2017 9:59 am

The Franco Battiato C/NC thread reminded me of one I’ve wanted to post for a while.

I’ve become more and more interested in Italian artists over the past few years. A few favorites below. Please recommend others.

I assume everyone here already knows about Uzeda. Just in case:

https://youtu.be/nsmwRrVK-z8

I spent some time in Catania in 2001 and hung out regularly at Agostino and Giovanna's record shop, Indigena, in via Amantea, so I knew them, but they didn't play a single show the entire time I was there, so I wound up seriously underestimating them. I finally saw them when they came to Chapel Hill, NC with Shellac, and holy hell. Was lucky enough to see them play again in Catania in 2007.

My friend and bandmate, Giuseppe, hipped me to another Catania band, Tapso II:

I think I met Stefano in 2001, but it was a long time ago and it could have been a different Stefano.

As for my friend, Giuseppe, he did this pretty great album before he moved to the states:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sou_d7geT7Q

In other news, I'm pretty into a lot of Italian pop from the 60s, especially Mina. The second season of Master of None had a ton of great music of this era in it.

Adriano Celentano has a lot of good pop songs, but I keep coming back to this nugget of experimental pop weirdness:

I could go on, but will let some others get in some licks.
I design and build stuff for musicians at Dusky Electronics.
I play guitar in Woodvamp.

Fuck, they are great. I would buy their LP if I could figure out how to do so. Their website and Facebook page link to a clothing store.

I'd buy this, too.

I've heard some Mina. It's okay. That Adriano Celentano song is dope!

Italian prog time? Yeah, italian prog time!

First, Il Balleto Di Bronzio. Weird mix of operatic prog and kind of a punk thing, no guitars, but lots of bass and organs.

phpBB [media]

Formula 3 - Sognando i Risognando. More traditional than Il Balleto Di Bronzo. I like them because I'm a prog-head, you might fuckin hate them

phpBB [media]

Area. Way more experimental than the other two groups, colser to Faust than any other thing, but with a free jazz thing from time to time.

phpBB [media]

Deadalus, weird jazz-prog thing.

phpBB [media]

Opus Avantra, as the name indicates, it's part of the most avant-garde side of prog.

phpBB [media]

So, in conclusion, italian prog is bombastic and weird, with a strange production that it's part of the italian 70's that I just fucking love for some reason. It's brown and punchy, with lot's of fakey effects, I don't know what it is but I like it.

I've seen Franco Battiato namechecked on this thread, so here is his new-wave-no-wave pop phase of the early 80's (his best, in my humble opinion). When I was a kid I used to find puzzling that the song's chorus was sung by a classical male choir. This song has bizarre, surrealist lyrics, yet most people around here know it very well. Also, please notice the David Byrne-like dance moves.

It must have taken Battiato a lot of guts doing his thing in late 70's Sicily, Italy's most conservative region at the time. He must have being booed offstage a number of times. What a hero.

In Fake Italian:

Ciao, my friends, I have the problem that when I post the song on the thread, the song she appears only as a youtube link, and not with beautiful big picture. I want the beautiful big image when I post the song, just like you, my friends: what do I do with the bbcode?

The big beautiful image, that's what I need. The simple youtube link, he's not stylish enough. Useful, maybe, but he doesn't flash like the big picture, you know? Grazie, my friends, for your help.

The BB Code, she is a strange thing, yes?

Now you should take, the how you say, the "link", yes? Then into the front you make the type like this: [media] Then, at the end of this link, you make this: [/media] Make the sure there are none space between link and the "media" tag things!

This post, I hope she was useful, yes? Grazie.
