Honduras Elections...please read

Postby J_Temperance on Mon Nov 27, 2017 8:52 pm

Hi everyone. Long time no see (not that I think that anyone has or should've noticed). You're probably wondering, "why should I care about some goddamn elections in some godforsaken backwater?". Please hear me out.

You see, my (poor, latin american) country has just undergone elections. These were not your usual elections. I'll provide the following articles for some necessary context,

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/11/27/world/americas/27reuters-honduras-election-ballots.html

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/11/23/opinion/honduras-juan-orlando-hernandez-election.html?mwrsm=WhatsApp&referer=http%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com%2F

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/28/world/americas/honduras-berta-caceres-desa.html

http://www.economist.com/news/americas/21731725-recording-obtained-economist-suggests-it-may-be-merits-investigation-hondurass?fsrc=scn%2Ftw%2Fte%2Fbl%2Fed%2Fishondurassrulingpartyplanningtoriganelectionplanb

This one's in spanish but its well worth he quick babelfish run through since it's very comprehensive http://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-america-latina-42079038

but suffice it to say, these were probably the most important elections in the country's history.

The reason I'm writing you guys is because I'm really, really scared right now. If you didnt want to click through the articles, what it basically boils down to is that the current sitting president is a very right-wing (usually) republican backed strongman and a very, very bad man who was running (in flagrant violation of the country's constitution) for reelection. He was trounced by a coalition in what's supposed to be the country's biggest ever electoral upset, though not really, since no one really believed all the media's lies about him being 20 points ahead of the winner; this, as most all the things you've probably heard about my country, was part of the huge PR campaign this government has had undergoing since day one.

Another thing that's part of said PR campaign is the role of so called military police. If you read any article on Honduras youll hear how weve supposedly experienced a sudden drop in crime rates thanks to the fact that we've practically been militarized since this guy got elected. This is utter bollocks,as an example, I'm a postgrad student (one of the lucky few around here) and in this year alone at least 70% of my classmates have been mugged at least once.

The reason I'm scared is that even after the country's electoral institution, the country's equivalent of the democrats (not part of the coalition) and international media have declared it, the government party is refusing to acknowledge the coalition's win and going on and on about how they're the true winners. They even held a desperate, poorly attended rally claiming to defend this so called result. Many of the party's top brass have been singled out for ties with drug cartels and horrendous embezzlement cases, some of them serving time already in the US https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/26/sports/soccer/rafael-callejas-to-plead-guilty-in-fifa-bribery-case.html, so I'm really worried that theyll pull something crazy. All day long has been nothing but happiness until I heard those really desperate and dread inducing rally screams, so now I'm worried.

What I'm asking you guys to do is to write to your congressmen or something so that international eyes are on this government to keep it from pulling crazy stunts.

You probably haven't heard about this since like I said, this guy is supposed to be one of the "good guys" (AKA right wing corporate friendly US allies) and not one of those evil chavistas.

Shit is tense. Like I said, most everyone says the coalition is the winner, but the electoral tribunal says that theyll have the definitive result until thursday. This has never, ever happened before and has everyone worried that theyre rigging everything to at least keep legislative control.

Honduras 2017 sounds like United States 2020.

Yup...the obvious happened. After I wrote that the election count ground to a standstill, even though in elections past we had definitive results in a matter of hours. After the count resumed, the right wing reelection douche started catching up with the coalition leader. After he was close enough, the electoral mainframe crashed. After it was rebooted the vote count went down in such a way that by dawn yesterday he was leading.

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/12/01/world/americas/01reuters-honduras-election.html

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/01/honduras-election-protesters-clash-with-police-as-opposition-cries-foul

People have not taken this lightly. There has not been an official call for protests but people are taking to the streets on their own. They are really, really pissed off, closing off streets, smashing up (tax-ecempted) fast food joints, they've set a town hall and (recently implemented) toll booths on fire. Facebook comments sections are filled with direct death threats against authority figures and calls for insurrection. People have never been like that here before, so much shit has gone down that you'd expect for some reaction to show up and theyd never shown it. I guess they were waiting for elections to register that malcontent but now that they see that those arent being taken into consideration, it's like years of pent up rage bubbling up onto the surface. These aren't your usual sectors protesting, its just people pissed off beyond belief, I've been gassed before but I'm scared of going to one of these things.

The fascists douchebags of course have responded the only way fascist douchebags know, by redoubling on their lies and having military stooges savagely beat up and fire tear gas and live rounds at protesters. There have been some wounded and at least 3 dead. You wont hear anything about this because fascist militarist douchebag is one of the last few US allies in the world, along with Colombia and Israel (who've provided drones, weapons and training to the aforementioned stooges). This is worse than Venezuela, in Venezuela you dont have military shooting live rounds at people. Please, do whatever is in your hands to shine a light on this.

Prowler. Aw cmon, you guys have friends everywhere, some of the most awesome people I've met are from the United States. It's your cunt government everyone hates.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/02/honduras-suspends-rights-as-violence-spreads-over-delayed-vote-count

Well, it happened. The looting went out of control, and the government has now declared 10 nights of suspension of constitutional rights to control it, supposedly. Protest has been criminalizaed. The strange thing is, roadblocks and protests were met with tear gases and live rounds, while the looting went strangely unopposed. Unopposed and filmed by the pliant, dictator controlled private media.

Yesterday the curfew/suspension of constitutional rights was announced 30 minutes before it was implemented by the military. There's widespread social media reports and documentation of multiple human rights violations. There's at least one person dead. Since it's not fair skinned, upper and upper midlle class people fighting chavistas, the international media barely gives a fuck, even though these rat fucks have done far worse shit than any chavista government.

thanks for the compliment, but i'm not American :)
Romania is in the EU so we're (i hope) still far from the situation in Honduras, but here we have, perversely, the mirror version: our abusive gov't is receiving anti-corruption scoldings from the US, so we're in the shitty position of siding with the Trump state department...

anyway i think there are common lessons to be learned about the frailty of democracy. I shared the story on FB for what that's worth

It's OK, appreciate any and all efforts to get the word on this out. I'm willing to bet that their is very little to zero coverage on this on most media outlets, like I said it's no big deal since it's the US ally bully that's doing the shit all the chavistas supposedly do.

I feel kinda weird posting it in this forum but I don't post in any other e-board, besides I've seen much love for Chapo Trap House and similar outlets around here so I know you guys wouldnt be "Its good that those vandals are getting served by the military! 'Murica!" or whatever

Well, things have taken a new twist...if anything, this whole mess will make for a good miniseries once the dust settles.

Not only did the OAS and EU issue stern warnings chastising the government and calling the elections pretty much fraudulent, but the civilian police (including our own equivalent of SWAT teams) rebelled openly against the government saying that they dont want to wail on citizens just for their political beliefs. There's also an issue with their pay but hey, you take what you can get with cops huh?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/04/honduras-election-board-refrains-from-declaring-winner-as-violence-continues

https://www.economist.com/news/americas/21731972-questions-about-integrity-vote-count-will-not-go-away-analysing-juan-orlando

Someone before mentioned how Honduras now could be the US in the future (I've always thought that Honduras is some kind of nightmare lab where shit gets tested on a compliant and impoverished populace by US Southern Command to see what sticks). Here is an editorial expounding on a similar viewpoint.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/12/04/the-crisis-in-honduras-should-matter-to-the-u-s/?utm_term=.f755e22218b1

Now that things are really looking up, there's rumors that the government might pull an autocoup to keep the Coalition from stepping into office. Sigh...it just never ends doesn't it?
