Local Underrated Bands?

Postby chris jury on Fri Dec 08, 2017 4:03 pm

I caught a comment from a friend recently, about The Bismarck being underrated. I don't know about that- but it got me thinking about all the local bands that I take for granted, that are awesome and don't get the respect/attention they deserve.

Maybe they've been grinding it our forever.
Maybe they are popular elsewhere but not at home.
Maybe they are doing something that is just not fashionable

I think of Seattle folks like Seminars, Glose and Zebra Hunt and a few others..all of whom should be the biggest thing ever. and on tour we get to play with so many great bands from all over the world.

So in this time of top 10 lists, etc..who is being left out? Who have we never heard of, but we need to listen to?
No one is paying you to sit on that bed and cry.

Here in Austin, I’d say Red X Red M was sorely underrated. Yuri and David have a new band called Plastique, and they’re every bit as great as RXRM. I hope Austin shows them plenty of love, this time around.

I thought New China deserved more attention around here. It’s hard to gain traction in this scene if you aren’t playing reverbed-out garage rock and wearing a lot of black. New China were colorful and out-of-the-ordinary.

Benko deserved a bigger audience, too. Erik’s bass playing boggles my mind. Look up their album that came out a couple of years ago, called The Civil Service. Pretty sure it’s on bandcamp or Spotify. He’s pretty much playing the way I wish I could play.

Bereft (blackened doom on Prosthetic)
Control (dubby/mathy noise/post-rock)
Coordinated Suicides (full bore noiserock)
Russell Emerson Hall. Throat torturer. Guitar abuser.
Current: Twelves and Bell & Circuit.
Ex: Tyranny Is Tyranny and United Sons of Toil.
