This has been going on for ages though hasn't it? Isn't there a forum member who's been writing about their demise for a while? Maybe I'm thinking of Guitar Centre.

Apart from their new guitars having no QA and often being terrible I think Gibson's main problem is that they hate guitars. I can't think of any other reason for why they would release something like the Firebird Zero. http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric ... eries.aspx

You could get a new Travis Bean for the $5000 they're asking for their panel van Les Pauls.

I don't know anyone who plays a Gibson model past 2005 or so. Pretty much any foreign competitor (talking set neck, humbucker-y guitars) have more to offer non-tone lawyers at often 1/3 of the price. "Shaggin' Wagon Les Pauls" FFS..

Don't let the door hit ya.

not to mention that CEO is a complete tool. I would be thrilled if the guitar business was pulled out of bankruptcy and sold to a decent ownership group who weren't such dickwads.

Oh yeah I figured that was implied, and reflected in every out of touch decision they ever made. (illegally importing endangered woods, then getting all libertarian conspiracy dickheaded about it was especially hideous.)

If I see a guitar with those horrible robot tuners in a shop I won’t even try it out.

In my mind, it stops existing as a guitar at all. It's more like a video game.

It has been so long since Gibson existed as a good company, or even an interesting company. Just sink already.

Honestly, I have a '10 SG Classic and an '07 (I think, though it could be as early as '03, I'll have to look) ES-335 and both are the best Gibsons I've ever owned.

They say in the article that the guitar business is still solid and profitable. They have "diversified" too much by buying all kinds of other non-guitar companies. Maybe they fancied themselves as a Yamaha or something.

GEE WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THAT COMING.

Jesus, why do people still try to prop companies up by buying up smaller companies on borrowed cash? It almost never works.

I love my 2009 SG Standard a lot. But yes, many shitty instruments made by Gibson over the last 10 years or so.

It's not just the last 10 years. Gibson acoustics went to shit in the mid 60's and their electrics followed suit shortly after. There are obviously great examples from all eras, including some being made right now but they have been riding on their past greatness, publicity and brand loyalty for like 50 years. I'm honestly amazed by it.

I love my J200 from 2010 or so. I've had a number of acoustics that are amazing from when Ren was running the Montana factory.

It's an old company with a long history with dips and high points of quality. They were about to go out of bankruptcy in 1986 when Henry and Co. bought them. Doubt they're ever stop making guitars but it looks like it'll be a very different company at the end of the year.

As long as there are still guitars, there will be a company named "Gibson" that makes SGs, Les Pauls, ES-335s, Flying Vs, etc.

As far as who will be making those guitars and where...we gon' see.
