It's the worst when people force you to get un-nice. Hang in there, Janeway.

We're back in the Rhineland village my partner is from for the holidays and we had to pre-emptively cut out her dad from Christmas after his last two acts were basically a suicide threat upon being told he needs to follow some rules ("I already asked the neighbor if he would drive me to Holland {to be euthanized, he has had cancer for the past three years} and he said yes.") and then basically stalking us in our hood, no other way to put it: he drove across Germany, stayed in the hostel around the corner where he always stays and showed up unannounced at the outdoor cafe we always stop at and pretended not to see us, walked right by the two of us and the little one. This all comes on the heels of twenty years of very inappropriate, hurtful behavior since he came back into my partner's life in her early-twenties after having basically abandoned the family for a decade.

Man, it has been pretty nice without him, just me and the little one and the ladies of the immediate and extended family. D.'s sister and mom communicate in weird ways or not at all, but they are great with the kid and there is a lot of love in the air in spite of the many problems of the past.

In the midst of this, it seems my own Dad's early-stage Alzheimer's has gotten significantly worse over the past months. We talked to him for about an hour on Christmas Eve morning and he was pretty lucid. He said there were a couple people in his house but that he knew it was a hallucination and he was pretty with it for the rest of the conversation. Apparently he must have had a bad episode afterwards that culminated in my brother having to pick him up and take him to his place against his will. My sister is flying up today and my Dad will probably be put into a memory care facility nearby within the week. I'm torn up, can't even begin to get my head around what is happening. My Dad finally retired a little over a year ago at 72 and his condition has gone downhill very fast. He was always tough and sharp, up until recent years. He did a lot of stuff into his late fifties that I would struggle to do smoothly now. We poured iron together 24 years ago, went on hiking trips on Isle Royale, climbing over slippery rocks in the rain all day up to fifteen years ago. Up until recently he was out on the Olympic Peninsula in the Lower Elwa in winter in waders doing fish population surveys as a volunteer as part of the re-naturation work there. I can't believe the next time I see him he will be in a home. We were planning to go over with the kid for the first time in late February, but then some things happened to make an imminent move to a larger place look possible and we put off the trip. Still hoping to get there in June.

Hug your loved ones, hold them tight. Happy second day of Christmas to everyone.

In that case, wouldn't you rather need to prove it to yourself?

There are two pairs of Jehovah witnesses across the street from each other right by a building downtown where I've been working. I've been racking my brain trying to manufacture a situation where I need some assistance, so I can say "can I get a witness?"

I went to see The Last Jedi today. I was very pleased. On the way home, I picked up a copy of The Killing Joke, and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Batmens, he are not having asthma talking in this film, unlike the films of Nolan guy!

Yesterday I read a poem/theater piece/whatever about deep, really deep fucking depression (4.48 Psychosis, by Sarah Kane) and it was so jarring to see the state of mind that I was in a mere year ago, compared by how... well, not happy, but kind of normal? that I'm now. I mean, at times it really looked like some harrowing days that I had, like she kind of pulled it out of my own head. She didn't get out of it, bummer, she was a really talented writter.

^its scary how well you can function depressed and not realize thT you even are. for me it was looking at pictures, how I ever wanted to be photographed and never had a big toothy gif the way you do when you're exploding laughter or happiness

you can be depressed and not even know it cause you're on your routine. the way to break through is to recognize how often you're singing or dancing around, whatever your jam is

This great little Mexican restaurant just opened up down the street.
I've seen the owner/ bartender at the gym fairly often as well.
Just found out out that we are both from Sioux Falls.
This might not seem all that rare, but it really is.
It's the first person I've met from there in over a decade living in New York.
