It depends on the implementation. There's 3 standard versions for PPIMV, as published in the Ken Fischer "Trainwreck Pages" and widely followed today. 2 of them dont affect the power tube operation at all (#1 and #3), and one does slightly (#2). Peoples opinions vary as to which they like....i like #2.

The other thing that PPIMV alters on most amps is negative feedback. When you have, say, a non-MV Marshall running at a certain setting there is a certain amount of negative feedback tapped from the secondary side of the OT and fed back into the phase inverter. If you put a master volume into the same circuit and start to dial it back from 10, even with the same amp settings, you'll start to get less negative feedback and more, earlier, and different distortion.

Would you describe this distortion as being of the 'fartier' brand?

I think those Music Man amps use a totally different version of MV that is non PPIMV, so these wouldnt apply.
I build effects and amps and do custom builds to order. Boom.

Anyone here got an Explorer they want to sell? Or talk me out of buying? Let's talk about Explorers.

I have a great Explorer that if I was in my right mind I would sell, but clearly I haven't reached that stage yet.

Yes, get an Explorer!

Y'all are a great bunch of enablers. I see there are many versions out there - anything to know about better-built models/years/etc? I know Gibson QC can vary at times...

Don't worry about Gibson QC.

Worry about that you're going to have to learn the guitar parts to Scorpions songs.

Mine's a Gibson. I don't know what year or anything like that, but it plays great. At the price I got it for, I don't imagine it's too vintagey.

Early 90s Gibsons are usually good values. Epiphone has a lot of quality guitars too, although there was a period in the mid '00s when they were using terrible-feeling fret wire.

Yeah, that looks like an Explorer is supposed to look.

Yeah, that looks like an Explorer is supposed to look.
Nope. Too pointy, and look at the weird curve of the back part. Scoliosis.

The Gibson Explorer in '76- early 80's got it right.

Dr Tony Balls wrote:Hamer Standard.

Yeah, Hamer also got it right. Gibson freaked out to the point of making Hamer-inspired Explorers with flamey tops (remember the E-2?)… But it wasn't the same.
