DPA / grey market microdot to XLR adapter question

Postby Bubber on Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:31 pm

Couple of quick questions.

Just got a used DPA 4060 and I'm looking to run it to XLR. The official DPA microdot-to-XLR adaptors are about $80-90. Anybody have advice (or better luck with the Google machine than I do) for unofficial ones?

Alternatively, my mic (used off eBay) is coming with micro-dot to mini-XLR; I could pick up mini-XLR to XLR for approx $8, but was advised this by a perfectly fine supplier:

I can't guarantee you good results if you use the MicroDot to TA4F adaptor, and then
another adaptor to XLR. There's various pinout issues to consider when we get into
scenarios like this. The mic needs power, and different wireless manufacturers use
different pinouts for power & audio.

Does that seem accurate--am I really asking for trouble with that? Doesn't phantom just run balanced on the two signal lines?

Thanks in advance.

If it's got a mini XLR on it (TA3, TA4, TA5), it's wired for a wireless beltpack transmitter. It probably wants somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-12VDC to run properly, which is what those transmitters supply. The official DPA XLR to microdot adapter (DAD6001) has a zener regulator in it to knock the 48VDC down to around 8.2VDC.

Sending full 48VDC to it is a sure way to blow it up.
