Rickenbacker 4001 neck pickup replacement?

Postby owen on Mon Jan 22, 2018 5:36 pm

My father in law gave me his 79 Rickenbacker 4001, but he replaced the neck pickup with a Bartolini and I hate that pickup and want to switch it. I hear the new 4003 Rickenbacker pickups are pretty great, anyone have any other reccomendations for other cool pickups or where to get them?

You have a very nice father in law! I’ve played a few 4003s with regular pickups and one with Seymour Duncans. These are like, guitar store demos so take it with a grain of salt, but I like the regular pickups just fine. All the Rickenbackers I’ve played are within 10 - 15 years old, and I don’t know how much things have changed over the years, but if it were up to me I’d just buy one from them and be done with it.

I bought a set for my 73 4001 few years ago from Classic Amplification (http://classicamplification.net/pup/crpup.html) and I like them a lot. Mine had a neck-position telecaster EMG pickup installed in the bridge position, and the bridge pickup hacked to fit the neck position. Go figure!

Some people automatically change the stock neck pickup to the Toaster pickup. So that's an option.

I've always wondered what a Firebird pickup would sound like there...

I have a set of Seymour Duncans in my 4001 and like them. I also have the stock Rick pickups but I prefer the SDs with tapewound nylon strings.
Good father in laws skills btw. My father in law gave me his ´78 precicion bass.

Throw a P-Bass pickup in there. You will have to cut a new pick guard (thanks Chuck Collins), but I did it 34 years ago and never looked back. You get the best of both worlds.
