I believe you are speaking of Magic Gardens, in Portland's China Town. Perhaps all the smarts flying around clouded your mammory of the name.

Ah, damn it!

You're right. In my defense, I've referenced it correctly in some other posts that I'm too lazy to cite. But thanks, Itchy!

"China Gardens" is a restaurant I enjoy. No boobies there..........(of the mammory-kind, anyway).

I'm assuming you've been to Magic Gardens?

Yes. For about ten minutes once with a group of people that included Andrei Codrescu. What a strange night that was... Anyway, some of my male friends in Portland are firm believers that the Gardens are indeed "Magic".

If ya wanna get technical there is a difference between a 'titty bar' and a 'strip club' you know.

I went to Thee Doll House (or was it The Crazy Horse?) with a bachelor party and a friend of mine TOTALLY almost got kicked out...for falling asleep. Apparently you can't fall asleep at a strip club? I guess it's considered an insult to the dancers.

not interested, but not crap

i have known reasonable women who worked as strippers. and unreasonable women as well. i don't think it was especially easy or wore especially well as a job, but you know, a lot of jobs are like that.

I come from a place with a lot of strip clubs. I've met and befriended or dated a lot of strippers. Most of them are hardcore drug addicts or were when they danced. Too many are dead or almost died. Most of us can't really fathom the "hassles" of that particular line of work because most of us here are male. I'd imagine none of you get your asses burned with lighters at work. Or bombarded with offers to lower yourselves into the depths of prostitution on a daily basis. Or violently groped by married men. And so on. There is a documentary I recommend seeing called "Stripped". It follows the lives of five dancers. By the end of the documentary, two of them are dead. Pretty fucking sexy. I love the titties on those dead bitches. I'm not saying these women didn't choose this profession. And they aren't all drug addicts, victims of molestation etc. But I'm sure with just a little bit of a back story on most dancers you would leave depressed and free of erection. The truth is just such a turnoff. And so unprofitable.

The truth is, most of them are pretty depressing, and really boring after about ten mnutes.

Oh yeah, and the music almost invariably sucks.

If I want to look at breasts, I prefer to turn to the fine products of Something Weird Video. Either that or my wife.

I like tits, and I like bars, so I don't see how they could possibly be crap in tandem.

That said, I haven't actually GONE to one in 9 years, and the only one I've ever been to is now closed ("Buns 'n Roses" in Minneapolis, which is now Rick's Cabaret).

After seeing Jake "The Snake" Roberts' sad descent into crack addiction in the fine documentary Beyond the Mat, i remain a fan of pro wrestling.

As i said earlier in the thread, i've known a couple strippers too. They got in, made their money, and got out after a few months. That's the way to go i think. Yes, those cautionary tales exist, but really, are they that way because they stripped, or did they strip because they were that way?

I've seen the trailer for this and it looks badass.

From "http://www.documentarychannel.ca/docs/listing.asp?StartLetter=Strip%20Club%20DJs&id=409"

Part psychiatrist, part puppet master, part babysitter, the DJ is most often the unlikely engine behind the strip club machinery. In his film Strip Club DJs, Derrick Beckles explores the critical and complex role DJs play in the bump-and-grind world of live adult entertainment in Canada. The best keep their dancers motivated and their patrons happy while dealing with problems, opportunities and benefits inherent in their unique workplace: drugs, overt and covert sexual activity, fights, scurrilous customers and their bodily fluids. It’s a pole-swinging ride through the harsh and often hilarious realities of this sleaziest of professions in Canada’s most notorious strip clubs. Good unclean fun!

Obviously, I didn't and knew that I couldn't. Otherwise I wouldn't be speaking of the dead and ruined lives.

Fuck all y'all.

mmmmm... Home Run Inn, I miss that place! There is NO good pizza up here!

But, I digress, it's titties we talkin' about.
I have been to plenty of strip clubs for one reason or another, never worked at one, never had a lap dance. I have had a good time at them and a bad time. I m not affected at all by them... of course I grew up seeing street hookers and transvestites in my neighborhood as a little kid, it's all just a fact of life.

The words you "guys" use "depressing", "seedy", "prostitution" -- please!?!?! I am shocked! It's not like in the days of Barretta. There are very nice places and lousy ones. Watching a girl swin on a pole while Danzig is playing, ain't so bad. As Ron Jeremy says, these are girls who would be working in a deli if it wasn't for stripping or porn, instead they are pulling in hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. They DON'T need anyone's pity or rescue!

My advice -- stay out of Portland -- the most strip clubs of anywhere -- it's like mexican food and dancers, pizza and dancers, laundrymat and dancers, etc. and so on.
