Because you're female, that's why. All the ladies seemed to love this band back in the day--even the cool ones.

Wow, this is very true in my experience. I got into this band when I was in 8th grade because this cool high school chick gave me a dubbed copy of Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Mother's Milk. She would wear a chili peppers t shirt with the big stupid logo on the back, with a flannel tied around her waist and shorts with combat boots up to her knees, I was totally smitten. She and her other hot chick friends would sit around talking about the chili peppers and how much they wanted to fuck Anthony Kiedis, and I thought, perhaps if I become more like Anthony Kiedis, the cool hot chicks would want to fuck me as well! I studied up on this Kiedis fellow and decided, no, I do not want to be like him at all, in fact he is lame. This was after getting the rest of their discography which I didn't much care for. I still like the non-singing parts of Blood Sugar and think Frusciante is a great player, but altogether I can't stand this band.

I still have their whole discography up to One Hot Minute on my ipod, because my lady, as a cool chick, was into them back in the day and still has a nostalgic affinity for all that crap.

The old stuff, you could mount some kind of defense I guess, if you had plenty of waffles at hand. But the band they turned into after they became a big radio hit machine... that takes things to a whole new level of fuck off.

Some sketchy half-assed funk riff thing, and Keidis does his awful hibba-zibba-dubba rapping for a bit, but everybody's just filling in time. And then bam, straight into a chorus that sounds like it was lifted from a Taylor Swift song, with no transition that makes any kind of sense. Then back to the hibba-zibba for a bit, back to the chorus, repeat until you reach the proscribed length for a radio single, and then everybody goes home and feels thoroughly ashamed of themselves if they have any self-awareness.

Those first two albums with Frusciante are at least listenable. Still Crap, but Crap with a hungry, talented guitarist.

I like how the solos in "Scar Tissue" are just octaves. Subtle and stupid.

The edited version of BSSM without Kiedis' vocals is the greatest thing they've done. Sadly it still has that leaden drumming on it.

Crap, but Crap most cool people seem to have toyed with. WF for Frusciante's occasionally solid contributions

Yeah, that cracks me up. Just remove Anthony, and suddenly the worst part is the drumming.

Yeah, it took me two listens to realise it was a parody. Even with lines like "If you want to get Frasier, you gotta get Grammer". Kudos, alabama scammers.

Man, what a uniquely horrible band. There might have been a time I would have at least stepped up and defended Frusciante, but those days are long gone.

I'm struggling to think of a band who have such a successful career while making music that manages to get so, so, so bad. Like, your U2s, your Springsteens: at least they've settled into their squalid little niche, playing it safe, keeping the fan base content, playing in enormo-domes decade after decade. But these clowns managed to go from the nadir of post-Lollapalooza dross w/ 'One Hot Minute' and somehow regroup with a more 'mature' approach and get more popular. Does music get any worse than By The Way? Urgh.

CRAP.

I've thought about this too, and concluded that this band is indeed the worst band, to have achieved such a sustained level of success, of all time.

This thread inspired me to listen to the Peppers for the first time in... ooo... maybe a decade.

Odd how the Hillel Slovak era stuff kinda holds up, esp Freaky Styley. Good goofy fun. Enjoyed dancing around to 'American Ghost Dance' etc. Lots of manchild energy, but it works.

But goddamn, all the Frusciante era stuff is just rancid. All of it! Whatever charm they had during their first run (I mean, you gotta squint, but it's there) vanishes totally by BSSM. Just dumb, ugly bullshit. Makes G'n'f'n'R and Jane's Addiction look like paragons of artistic virtue by comparison.

"Warped" is basically a Jane's Addiction song with another singer.

Kiedis' shitmouthed oaf-groan is maybe the purest aural representation of everything bad about El Lay.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

To add to the Kiedis vocal pile-on, isn't there a part in one of the "Around the World" choruses where he basically goes "Ching chong" over and over again? Jesus Fuckstick Christ.
You guys don't mind that I crash your little sausage party, right?
