I don't think they're crap, but I don't like the way the drums sound on a few tracks on their debut. I can't even listen to that 'Lola' cover because I hate the way the toms sound. I don't know the history of the album - was it recorded on a shoestring budget? If so, that's fine, but I still don't like the way some of the drums sound.
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."

I don't know how their first album is easily in my top ten albums of all time yet I haven't heard a note of Odyshape. I will change this, stat.

Odyshape is excellent. I do like the first one for all it’s quirks. The Void is one of my favorite songs.

Odyshape is so good.

I'll always have time for minimal/pastoral/feminine post-punk (YMG, Marine Girls, Antena et.al)

But doesn't it seem like these bands make one great record and vanish?

Really, really, really bad, but I feel like a total piece of shit for saying it, like I've just kicked a kitten. I sorta understand the charm of this band, but the music just blows. Sorry Raincoats, but it's a CRAP from me.

Furthest from crap. That 33 1/3 book that came out about the first album might be one of (if not THE) best book of that whole series.

Oh nice, I'll have to pick that up. Shortly before its release I was at an event where Jenn Pelly did a live interview with Thurston Moore... she was trying to ask him questions but all he wanted was to pick her brain on writing the Raincoats book and her experience talking to them. It was pretty funny... the juxtaposition of her, obviously a bit nervous to be interviewing one of her heroes in front of an audience and trying to keep the talk focused, and him not wanting to talk about himself or Sonic Youth and only nerd out about the Raincoats.

Odyshape literally gets better every time I hear it.

Still new things to absorb in it, after all these years. If I had to whittle my LPs down to one tote bag, it'd be in there.
