Band: The Karl Hendricks Trio

A great guitar player, one of my favorite singers, and composer of some of the funniest, saddest lyrics ever. A very underappreciated band, I think.

Agreed. Very simple band on paper, but stunning, aching, and wonderful in execution. A Gesture of Kindness is just so incredible.

Not crap.

Some Girls Like Cigarettes was absolutely incredible. A landmark of my college years and stands the test of time.

They wrote a goddamned great song called "Naked And High On Drugs." I have to agree that they are really underappreciated, but I think that is kind of by choice, seeing as they hardly ever tour outside of the Keystone state. Since Some Girls Like Cigarettes I've bought all of their records without hearing them first, so I guess that means NOT CRAP.

My favorite Karl Hendricks lyric:

"Your lesbian friends sure know how
to wreck the house.

Haven't they got better things to do
with their fists and mouths?"

Not Crap. Simple, heartfelt tunes about adolescent longing. Back in the day I was a big fan.

Based entirely upon this lyric (I used to go to parties thrown by the women's rugby team, so I know all about lesbians trashing a house), I will now check out Karl Hendricks.

Been listening to Declare Your Weapons today like it might save my life, and having one of those "Why the hell haven't you been playing this record every day of your life for the past 10 years?" moments. Great goddamn record.

Always smart, always delivers great riffs. Karl's not as prolific as he used to be -- just two albums since Declare Your Weapons -- but he keeps getting better at his craft. His last album, The World Says from a couple years ago, is my favorite thing he's ever done, and anyone with a Crazy Horse craving needs to find it and play the closing track "California in October." The lineup behind him keeps changing, but I've never seen him deliver a bad -- or even mediocre -- show. Pittsburgh's hottest songwriter.

Pretty fucking good at his best. Never not-good. I agree that his last couple records are his best and eminently worth seeking out.

Aces. The shows are unfortunately too rare, but when he's out there, he's worth seeing. Great guy, too.

This past spring, the Pittsburgh blog Draw Us Lines filmed Karl performing solo in the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.

"You're a Bigger Jerk Than Me."

"Dreams - Ha."

The latter is one I had not heard before, and his use of Godard recalls his personalizing other pop-culture references into a relationship ("I'm Not Crying, Karl" and "Like John Travolta" come to mind). Hope it appears on an album before too long.

Tre Orsi got to play with the KH3 in Pittsburgh last summer.

We shouldn't have been allowed in the building, much less on stage. They were absolutely stunning. I was a fan before, but jesus christ.

Also, one of the nicest dudes (and greatest families) ever.
