Unwound are in the exclusive pantheon of bands that speak to me on a personal level. It's hard to understand why, they just have this I-don't-know-what-it-is quality that sets them apart. It is this undefinable aspect that makes them hard to recommend to others. I know Trosper's guitar playing has a lot to do with it; his approach is pretty singular.

I think they pull together a pretty selective list of influences and made a sound together that is unmistakably theirs. They put out their last album ten years ago, and I still don't feel that this band gets the credit it deserves.

I found their live show riveting and wish I could have seen more.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, one of the reasons I play music.
Absolutely, NC on every possible level.

they played some boring shows in their time, but when they were on, they were like a freight train of awesome.

I don't think it's all standard. The few times I saw them play he always had a few guitars on hand and changed between songs so I always presumed there were weird tunings going on.Whenever they toured the UK it seemed like they would do either a dirge kind of set or a fast blow-out set and the tuning seemed to dictate that, as though they had to pick one set of songs in one tuning or the other.

I'm fairly certain that Unwound doesn't use standard tuning. Maybe the self-titled album, but beyond that, I don't think so.

The two tunings which I know they use are D-A-E-A-A-D and F#-A-E-A-A-D.

Both tunings employ those doubled up strings tuned to A, and Justin may set one slightly out of tune with the other to create that pulsing effect.

There's a ton of anecdotal information on their equipment here: http://unwound.livid.com/equipment.html

I know they talk about tunings on that page as well.

I'm so thankful there are other Unwound geeks out there.

There's nothing WRONG w/this band, per se. But they always struck as kinda boring, '90s indi -rock by the numbers. Not Crap, Not Not Crap. Not Voting. Lukewarm.

Never listened.

But I did see something when I looked them up because of this thread:

"Justin's tuning... is written on the back of the headstock of his gtrs. (like Sonic Youth does). However, he does change it up a bit for different songs...here goes:

Tuning #1 : D-A-E-A-A-D (low to high)
used for : All Souls Day, Usual Dosage, Sonata for Loudspeakers, Devoid, Next Exit, (and many others that I haven't quite been able to place or are just assumptions on my part.)

Tuning #2 : F#-A-E-A-A-D (low to high)
used for : Dragnalus, Abstraktions, Honourosis, Lifetime Achievement Award, and others.

Justin may also tune that second A in the pair of A's to B or something else for some songs, namely Corpse Pose or Unauthorized Autobiography (?) and he may retune that high D on the bottom...again, these are just an assumptions though."

So yes - Dude uses some weirdass tunings.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

I could never see Unwound as lukewarm, or typical rock. It's too forward thinking, and (sorry) adventurous to be just run-of-the-mill. The harsh noise, the aggressive basslines, the thunderous drums, the altered tunings, etc. Even at their worst, or most boring, or what have you, it always made for interesting, unique listening.

Someone mentioned the excellent "Corpse Pose" in another thread, which inspired me to see whether someone had posted my favorite Unwound song on YouTube. Yes, they had.

I thought they were okay back in the day, and I've mentioned elsewhere how they bored the hell out of me both times I saw them. Still, not crap. I should revisit them in depth at some point.

I've been able to figure out Corpse Pose on guitar and it seems to be just a drop D tuning, not terribly difficult. Unless it's just like super easy when you're using one of his weird tunings... That song's super fun to play!

one of my favorite bands. got to see them at fireside bowl a while back, they had some very nice feedback. I had heard them at a friend's house and went with to the show. ended up getting all their albums, especially like repetition and the last one. future of what is great too imo

While on a mini-road trip, I got phenomenally lucky back in February and found a copy in a record store in Santa Barbara. I've been searching for Leaves on vinyl for the better part of ten years.

Huge fucking victory.

All this time and I never knew Circus Lupus' drummer was female. Not that it makes the slightest bit of difference aside from the further realization that in an place and time where artists every thought and whim is placed on the public record, scrutinized, and shared, I know next to nothing about pretty much all my musical heroes.
