Easily Double Nickels. Zen Arcade was something I used to enjoy but quite honestly many of the lyrics seem too juvenile/angsty these days and the overall sound is limited in comparison to the clearly superior record. Zen Arcade was a great record for it's time but Double Nickels is a great record for all time.

Double Nickels is far superior. Zen Arcade is ok, and has some good tracks but overall doesn't do much for me. I first heard both albums (and both bands) in my 20s. I might feel differently if I heard these at a younger age. I wish I could see what people find so awesome about Husker Du. Everyone talks about how the band or that album changed their lives; the only change in my life was that I had another record in my collection and was confused about why the band was so great.

Double Nickels is an album I can return to time and time again.

Tangential question: Wasn't the Meat Puppets Up on the Sun originally supposed to be like a double album, in a (friendly) response to Zen Arcade and Double Nickels?

I choose Zen Arcade.

Both albums sound terrible, but Zen Arcade sounds less terrible because it's more straightforward music and Spot couldn't fuck it it up.

Double Nickels On The Dime is way more creative, but Spot's production is more apparent and worse. Way too tinny sounding.

I would pay good money to buy the masters of every SST record that Spot recorded to have Bob Weston remaster them so they didn't sound like shit.
Here comes the pissball, shithead - get ready!

Nickels. I certainly prefer the Minutemen's earlier work--I think brevity is their friend both in terms of songwriting and their packaging--but Zen always felt like I was being challenged to sit through it. Half-baked concept, indulgent side-padding...I like it but even it's not an album I run to, even for the Huskers.

I think also with Zen, we're hearing a band rearing up for its decline whereas everything I love about the Minutemen is there on Nickels.

Both too long. Relax, dudes.

Nope. Ethan James did.

I just voted in the Kerbled poll for Zen Arcade and here for Double Nickels. I like having it both ways.

(Really, though, Double Nickels is the superior album. But I still love Zen Arcade.)
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

Minutemen are a perfect band and Double Nickels on the Dime is a mind-blowingly great record. Enough for any sane person involved in the making of that record to hang their hat on for sure.

But for reasons I can't explain, I just enjoy listening to Zen Arcade way more. I know creatively speaking it doesn't stand a chance when pitted against Double Nickels on the Dime, it just speaks volumes without doing much in the way of extra notes etc.

Zen Arcade was my choice in the Kerbled thread, it will be the same thing here.

Ethan James recorded it, not Spot. Also it sounds awesome.

Zen Arcade does not.

Zen Arcade wins.

I'm listening to the Double Nickels for the first time ever right now.

Keep in mind I have every fIREHOSE record. I've seen Watt + the Secondmen / Missingmen / Jom and Terry maybe 6-7 times. I've read every one of the tour diaries on the hootpage.

This record is cool as hell.

DNOTD. Haven't ever thought Zen Arcade was even a particularly good Hüsker Dü LP.

Ah, the Clarkson delivery! Classic.

I heard Double Nickels at the right time. 17? Just a beautiful age to be into that record.

Between D.Boon, FMSteve circa Rapeman, the Meters/JBs and that one Sister Nancy record 'Bam Bam' that was probably the bulk of what informed my guitar playing for a long time.

Patrick Smith of "ask the pilot" weighs in:

Now and Zen: The Greatest Album of Them All Turns 30 !
http://www.askthepilot.com/zen-arcade-turns-30/

Suddenly there it was, on a rack up front. It was called Zen Arcade, whatever that heck that meant. I picked it up and, hey, what’s this, it’s a double album! As a teenage punk rocker weaned on Black Flag and Minor Threat, with a rather one-dimensional appreciation for music, the very weight of the thing, together with the heady title and the washed-over, almost Impressionist cover art was intimidating. It seemed so arty and grown-up. It also made me curious. What was this strange record?

What it was, and what it remains thirty years later, is the greatest indie-rock album of all-time; if not, in my extraordinarily biased opinion, the greatest album of all time, period.
