Yeah, that's the thing. There's gonna be a Republican candidate, regardless. The question becomes do we want someone so batshit that Obama could probably easily best him, or someone who seems not so batshit so that our stomachs turn less if they win?

I mean, either way...I'm kinda thinking the whole thing is sorta hopeless.

Yes. You can't win the GOP nomination and beat Obama anymore. It's just taking too much money and time for them to decide. In the meantime everyone is getting more and more turned off by the frontrunner(s). It's even creating these strange sex debates in congress because the GOP has no leadership. It's a wonder trump isn't running.

Short answer: Obama/Biden will be fine. Everyone else gets fucked.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry over the implications of this story.

These article dissecting the "financial mysteries" of Romney's personal taxes blew my mind:

It's kinda sad that the only two choices you have are between the centre-right and far-right.

SO Incredibly dumb. I didn't think he could fall any further.
“I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13 percent. I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. So I paid taxes every single year,” he told reporters Thursday...His campaign later confirmed Romney was referring only to the amount he pays in federal income taxes and not personal property or sales taxes.
I can't imagine George W Bush ever having this conversation. So ridiculous. It's so much better to play dumb or (preferably) just release the records. Talking about it like this? Are you for real?

The Gawker has published a 950 page document detailing Mitt Romney's offshore tax arrangements:

The Bain Files: Inside Mitt Romney’s Tax-Dodging Cayman Schemes

and summarised here in The Gaurdian:

950 pages of documents contain internal audits and financial involving Bain Capital and Romney's personal fortune

The more I learn about Romney the less I like him and the lower my esteem of the non-productive, wealthy, money gamers becomes.

Perhaps his fluency in tax dodges and the myriad ways our tax code abets and encourages such shennanagins means he is serious about an equitable retooling of said code, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If he is elected I would bet that, without even thinking about it in raw, literal terms, or in metaphorical parlance, the reality will nonetheless be clear: the middle class is fractured, along with the working classes that are intertwined therein, and they either don't vote, can be easily manipulated to waste themselves on non-materialist issues, or are unwilling to entertain ideas and interpretations that truly threaten the hegemony of the grossly monied classes and their vision of how capital should work. In other words, the middle class is going to take a bath on this and there is no fear of any repercussion on the right.

The fact that Romney does not centerpiece his gubernatorial time in Massachusetts and instead keeps his campaign chugging along by way of assertions that his time as a privileged, pretty boy private equity raptor somehow translates as proof of his fitness for this ultimate office is sort of depressing. I mean, do people not see the obvious where that is concerned? If the problems with his relative silence on Massachusetts is not clear to one and all then what might be?

The Massachusetts silence speaks to his campaign strategy. He doesn't want our vote, my vote, the independent vote. I hope it's a losing strategy, but IF he somehow finds a way to win, the far right will take the credit. (It will be too close for anyone to claim a mandate.) And that's crazy, because the tea party fought hard against Romney in all the primaries. He's here because Newt and the black pizza guy went broke. Big business lined up behind Romney. Having bought him, they don't care how much lip service he gives to Chick fil a voters as long as it will get him to the white house. Even if Romney wins, he won't be your president. He won't even pretend. For all of Obama's faults, at least he pretends to be on your side. Mitt Romney doesn't even know what that would look like.

He might be the weakest presidential candidate in 32 years. I didn't follow the Dukakis campaign this closely. (In fact, let's hope Massachusetts is bad luck.)

Good point you raise and I find this fascinating. If you recall, during the 2008 campaign the right was constantly talking up Palin's (the VP candidate) "executive experience" as governor of Alaska because they know that historically governors better than congressmen in presidential elections. Politics, indeed.

Ann Romney is really laying it on thick at the RNC right now. It's pretty transparently obvious that this is how the Republican party is trying to court voters. She's had a couple "amiright, ladies" moments.

What a boring night. Ann did a fine thankless job. Fatty Christie was a snooze.

Hope tonight Ryan or someone gets all Pat Buchanan on the dais and calls for a culture war. It's the 20th anniversary of "Pat Pat Pat!"

I was pretty impressed with Ann's speech. Not because it was good (it was of course objectively pure bullshit), but because it effectively did exactly what it needed to do. It needed to humanize the Romneys to the base who wants to believe they can 'have a beer with the president'. Talking about a basement apartment at 22? Lots of us have been there. I would assume Papa George probably paid for some maids/nannies/butlers too, but nevertheless.

I missed Christie's speech, but he obviously closed because they didn't trust how well Ann's speech would go over. Funny outcome. This morning Ann is the star, and the GOP is trying to bury Christie's routine self-servitude in the headlines.
