Easily Touch & Go, around half of my CD collection is T&G/Quarterstick. I don't know if I have anything from Dischord.

Cocorosie and Urge Overkill are hideous black eyes for T&G, but they have one of the highest ratio of bands I like I've ever seen on a label.

And, of course, they released Hissing Prigs and TVOTR's first EP and LP, which amounts to two hours of my favorite music ever, so kudos.

Circus Lupus have a couple of great songs.

Flour is monolithic, it's a no-contest.

Circus Lupus have 2 insanely good albums which, had they been recorded by I dunno - Steve - would rank up there alongside anything by The Jesus Lizard easily to most of you guys. The only thing that lets them down is the way they're recorded but fuck it, you can say that about 90% of the Dischord catalogue before the mid 90s. The production is weird but they are still awesome, involving, intelligent, hard rocking albums one of which is comfortably in my Top 10 of all time.

Gyahmuhhhrppppfffooouuuuu (the sound of me having to make another one of these bloody impossible thunderdome decisions in the space of a day)

My first thought is that these are two awesome labels which are both pretty much the perfect realisation of what they set out to do, and that's no mean feat...

I swing towards T&G, but then suddenly I think of a life without Lungfish or Fugazi..... oh dear.... but then no Slint or Shellac... taking away any of these bands would leave a gaping, painful hole in my record collection.

Curse you, for asking me this! I should be doing stuff with my day. Fuck it, I can't choose but I'm going to go with dischord because they need the votes.

Is this the "Which Label rips off the bands more?" thread now?

If so, I say Homestead.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

No, it is not.

I am well aware of the well documented piss poor business practices of both of these labels, and I do not defend them. However, each managed to release some very important records before the bands wised up and went elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I think the Homestead catalog from about 84-87 is just about unbeatable, as far as good/bad ratio.

Fugazi and Lungfish is basically impossible to beat.

Even above the bands on T&G.

Either Tough & Go's website is poop, or their back catalog has run completely dry. I can only order mp3's on their site, no hard copies of anything!

I've warmed up to more Dischord acts lately, but T&G still takes it.

Dischord.

I wish T&G would've continued to emphasize Chicago area bands and explore the evolution of a sound and style that was specific to the Midwest. Once they started looking elsewhere, they lost my interest. Dischord kept my interest, because it continued/continues to document the evolution of a type of music in a particular region, albeit slowly, these days.

I think they just are not doing fulfillment right now?

Their website definitely leaves me unfulfilled.

Oh, and as far as the Thunderdome goes, it's a tough call when I stack up the bands I love from both labels. Fugazi and Lungfish vs. Uzeda and Shipping News? This is not a fight I ever want to decide.

But the choice between labels is easier once I bring in other factors. Namely, Dischord keeps their back catalog in print!

Dischord.

You don't remember a few years ago when T&G more or less said they were done making records?

Their website has never been set up for direct ordering from what I remember.

The link to Saki that jurgis posted is probably the best way to get anything from them. Actually some stuff was on there that I didn't think would still be in print (Arsenal and Flour LPs).
