I have the T&G Half Machine/Alien Sountracks disc and it is wonderfully demented. How did they get those drum sounds? I honestly have no idea. So not crap!

Since getting this cd, i have been wondering the exact same thing.
That sound is tough.I agree whole heartedly with the above statement.

they definitely distorted the room mics on the drums. i do this all the time and it sounds pretty similar (though i don't take it to quite that extreme).

This thread's been of great help. I got into Chrome around the same time I was exposed to Big Black, Flaming Lips, Telescopes, and Butthole Surfers. I only own the T&G CD of Alien Soundtracks/Half-Machine Lip Moves, and have always been intimidated by their huge and varied catalogue. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Definitely not crap.

Alien Soundtracks/Half-Machine Lip Moves is not even the best of Chrome's output. If you can get ahold of some of the late 70's/early 80's stuff, I think you'll be horrifically entertained.

One of the best artists ever. NOT CRAP.

Hey - I love you guys - and if all you know is that Touch&Go "two-fer" CD then you're missing out on quite a bit... I have painstakingly hunted down ALL THAT SHIT (for better or for worse) and if anyone wants copies - fuck it - just ask - that shit will not be "in print" in proper agin in our lifetimes... Damon is dead, the others I think dont' give a rat's - but buy a Helios Creed record once in a while, OK?

And it's not some braggart thing - it's really just that I have all this shit and nobody to share with - I can play it at my girlfriend or whoever but it's not the same as somebody who would "GET IT". Yanno?

I have CHROME*. You need CHROME? You talk to me. Salut.

* and possibly any offshoot side-project you can think of... just sayin'...

His girlfriend played keyboards. If you've ever seen videos of Billy Idol's band, with the keyboard player...she was dressed just like that.

Helios had 2 vocal mics set up. One was normal, and the other was heavily effected (kind of Gibby-sounding). He switched back and forth constantly.

There were less than 10 people at the show.

I saw this tour as well.

I thought it was quite good, just for his gtr playing. Odd, yes, you are correct, Jung. It was odd.

The Seattle show was also sparsely attended.

My first post!

Yes, the best introduction to Chrome is definitely the already mentioned 'Half Machine Lip Moves'/'Alien Soundtracks' CD. As far as I'm concerned, you can't have one album without the other, and so collected together on a single non-stop CD is perfect. It's surprising no-one had reissued them together on CD before T&G. T&G really should've reproduced the original LP inner-sleeve artwork inside though.

And as no-one else has, I'll mention Chrome's often ignored pre-Helios debut album, 'The Visitation'. Personally, once I'd got over the initial surprise of some of the 'questionable' vocal stylings, etc, I grew to love it and think of it as much of a Chrome album as any others. Granted, I don't hold it in as high regard as I do the above, but it's certainly worth investigating to hear certain tracks and ideas that were a hint of what was to come. Incidentally, I'm after an original Siren vinyl of this ...

'Red Exposure' and 'Blood On The Moon' are of course another couple of great albums, but when listening I always can't help but think how much greater these albums would've been with the same raw production as 'Half Machine Lip Moves' and 'Alien Sountracks'.

etc
etc

Have you seen the videos for 'Meet You In The Subway' (from 'Subterranean Modern' comp) and 'New Age' (from 'Red Exposure') on www.youtube.com?

I love Chrome.

I played them for a couple of my friends and they asked me if I seriously listened to it as I drove around completing my errands. My response, "yes, yes i do."

I was in San Francisco last week and saw flyers all over Haight St. for a Helios Creed show, I was bummed that it was two nights after I had to depart.

I chatted with Helios on the internets, recently. A real down to earth guy, not some kind of space cadet as you would expect. God bless him, he says his best stuff is yet to come.

I have a live recording of "Third from the Sun." It sounds recent and it sounds amazing.

1. Where the fuck did this come from?

2. Where can I get the rest of this show?

I think Rey played on one or two of Helios Creed's solo records. H.C. is worth checking out - he is a real nice guy and very good at what he does. My band played with him in the 90s in Boston. We hung out in the van in back of the Rat - he smoked hash, I did not partake. I wanted to remeber the songs. He was amazing. That Melody Maker was howlin'! I think it was just a 3 piece band. bass/gtr/drums.

I have the chrome box on CD - it is on my ipod, and the songs come by once in a while. Even the longer drony ones are still interesting, especially if you know you won't have to listen to 5 or 6 of them in a row.

The strangest thing about chrome was the stories I heard in the 80s about them not being able to get gigs. It seems that they did not have much luck getting their early records out in the U.S., so a lot of their stuff came out in the U.S. as english imports. Everybody assumed they were an english band, so nobody thought they would tour, and/or if they did, they would want too much in guarantees, so they had a hard time setting up gigs/tours. Just what I heard.

Damon Edge was the reason they didn't tour. He didn't want to. HC did.

dunno if this has been posted already, but the albums "alien soundtracks", "half machine lip moves" and "3rd from the sun" have just been reissued on noiseville records (http://www.noiseville.com/home.html). think they've only printed 1000 copies of each though, so you might want to track them down before it's too late.
