Joy Division, only for the fact I heard them when I was young, impressionable, sort of sad and learning how to play bass. There. I listen to Joy Division more.

Birthday Party are a great band. Really great. Love Tracy Pew's bass lines and Roland Howard's guitar parts. I can do without Nick Cave, but he doesn't grate on me until about the tenth or twelfth song.

birthday party had a bigger emotional span. joy division has sad and a rocking kind of sad.

birthday party has all kinds of fucked up shit. especially as they progressed. a far more rewarding listen. least as far as i'm concerned.

birthday party:
"hair shirt"
"friend catcher"
happy birthday"
"mr. clarinet"
"hat's on wrong"
"several sins"
"dim locator"
"zoo music girl"
"kathy's kisses"
"big jesus trashcan"
"bullybones"
"(sometimes) pleasure heads must burn"
"deep in the woods"
"jennifer's veil"
"mutiny in heaven"
"sonny's burning"
"fears of gun"

joy division:
first half of "still"
"disorder"

tbp takes it. seriously, every JD album bores me to fucking death with the exception of the first half of "still." christ, what a tedious fucking band.

I just like Joy Division better. I can't adequately defend this particular opinion in words.

Happy Thanksgiving, folks.

Fuccckkk.

I can't believe this is that close. You people make me sad.

"(Sometimes) Pleasure Heads Must Burn" alone shits all over Joy Division's entire discography. I like Joy Division, but there's just no contest here.

How do I vote for both? Both are perfectly fine with me.

The Birthday Party. No question in my mind. Then again, I've been a huge fan of theirs since the eighties. They are one of the only bands I listen to regularly (constantly) from that long ago. In my opinion, as I have probably made clear, nobody comes close to Nick Cave as a performer, song writer, lyricist ( except maybe Bob Dylan) or artist in general. The Birthday Party were the roots to all he's since done.

Can't vote on this cos they're too different bands and not that comparable, one of them introspection the other one outer, still listen to both of them on a regular basis.

At their best, Joy Division is mildly interesting.
Never been a huge fan of them nor followed them closely, but from what I can tell, they were an utterly humorless band. This is something I just can't stomach in rock n' roll.

Birthday Party by a mile. They make with the rock in a great great way.

Joy Division, though I didn't get them untill I was well past 30. I was surprised to hear that these bands get compared to each other. I don't hear it at all. Birthday Party records go off like a stack of dynamite, though. That's pretty fucking cool.

Weirdly enough last week I got back in to the Birthday Party for the first time in two or three years. I don't know what happened in that space but I find them a lot more enjoyable these days. All the same, for now I prefer Joy Division.

The Birthday Party were the better band, but if I had to only choose one to listen to for the rest of my life it'd be Joy Division.

indeed. humor is important to me in a rock band.

that said, JD did do a pretty comical cover of "sister ray."

Joy Division could never, ever have recorded "Capers."

My decision still stands. The Birthday Party.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

Both incredible bands. Up there with the all time greats.

However, I feel like Joy Division wins just for recording the album Closer, which is as perfect a document as I can imagine any band leaving. I like all of The Birthday Party's records but they never made an out and out masterpiece. Joy Division did.
