Am I the only one that listens to Tweez more than Spiderland? I like Spiderland better, of course, but (as some people mentioned before) I really have to be in a certain mood to listen to it.

I don't think Spiderland is boring, but I can see how one might think so. If I'm not in the right mood, it's very boring. If I'm in the right mood, it's amazing.

I can listen to Goat anytime.

I feel a bit lame for admitting this, but I'd really like to know Steve's choice between these two albums because he's praised them both quite vehemently.

so, i guess the cut tape aspect of the song does nothing for you.

unremarkable my butt.

Yeah, I never noticed a "cut tape" aspect of the song, so I can safely say it does nothing for me. It sounds like a repetitive blues-rock song with good drum and bass playing, and it's completely blown out of the water by "Lady Shoes."

mr. arrison wrote:Yes, Slint's once grand entry into the halls of mr.arrison's rock hall of fame were soon tainted by the legions of sub-par copycats ("boat-rock", "mogwai" etc.) and then destroyed by seeing the "legends" perform live, appearing bored out of their skulls 14 years later. All of this has the effect of watering down the original masterpiece.

I halfway agree with your second point: Slint at the Metro on a Friday in 2005 was the best show I've ever seen. I was in a state when I walked out of that room. The second time, in Chapel Hill last summer, was one of the worst show experiences I've had. I didn't have a bad time, but something was just wrong with the whole event.

Your first point about their legacy is way off. Slint has a great legacy. Forget about mediocre bands that tried to copy them; it's stupid to hold dime-a-dozen bar bands against the Rolling Stones or Puddle of Mudd against Zeppelin. Consider the real legacy: what the musicians went on to do. Papa M and Evergreen are great in their own right, and the last two For Carnation records are almost as creative as Slint and much more extreme. What all this has to do with Spiderland is, you can hear these three real different threads in that album. It's just full of cool ideas.

I love that it takes four people to play "Don, aman." Sometimes there are about nine people playing in a For Carnation song, and you can barely hear music.

Both these albums have but not one hair out of place BUT... I like the Lizard more, so they win.

I'd have to go with the Jesus Lizard because I've had more experience with them. Don't get me wrong, I'm really starting to get into Slint, it's just that the Jesus Lizard are a butt-kicking band that totally kick arse, whereas Slint is that bleak, extraodinarily talented band that released one good record and then disbanded.

It's like when Slint played at the Pitchfork music festival. It's not like they lacked charisma or stage presence, but it was never like those totally awesome TJL concerts, where the intensity was immense and David Yow was absolutely out of his brains.

The Jesus Lizard for me, for now...

I have a funny feeling Slint will surpass The Jesus Lizard as my more favourite band. But I like them both.

1991 huh? The correct answer is Jackson.

Tar > Jesus Lizard > Slint

But for the sake of this thread....

...Goat.

Goat. B/c I can't find any faults w/it. It's just a frighteningly solid record.

Even though Spiderland is a more startling-sounding, distinctive album, I really, really dislike the vocals on "Washer." And there are some draggy bits.

I listen to Goat more frequently than I listen to Spiderland. My answer is Goat, and that is my final answer. And God saw that it was good.

loathesome task, this one.

i can't really imagine living without either, honestly. both totally critical to a college junior when they came out, both equally musically powerful and great, and mind bombs for their time. really surprised to see so much slint bile though... and mebbe it is because so many people took their ideas a few feet down the road while the jesus lizard didn't have so many competant borrowers.. i don't reckon it really matters either way.

fuck all y'- i'm taking both. hairsplitting be damned- i'm just admitting i dunno how long a piece of string is.

Two albums so great, this poll shouldn't matter for shit. "Goat" is perfect, but it's right up my alley. "Spiderland" took me to strange places. That counts for a lot in music to me.

+1.

It'd be much more interesting for me to see a Goat vs. At Action Park, or Spiderland vs. Rusty.

My vote would still go to Spiderland in the spirit of this particular poll. Listened to both records earlier and loved the shit out of both of 'em (hadn't heard either in at least four months).

I just played Spiderland this weekend on the new turntable after not hearing it in years. That abum has not aged well at all.

Goat, Goat, a million times Goat.
