Nomeansno barely even registers as a blip on my musical radar.

Am I really missing something by not caring about them? I'm not even sure what they sound like.

Is this a generational thing?

Minutemen by far.

Seriously. I don't think I would recognize a No Means No tune if I heard it.
I never heard of them until a few years ago, while the Minutemen, one of the greatest rock trios ever, is indelibly etched into my brain. I can easily think of at least a dozen Minutemen songs at any time.

These bands have a very different sort of sonic presence, but aesthetically, personally, they are sort of reminiscent of one another:

Goofy appearance
Notey bassists
Raspy, heartfelt vox
Intuitive songwriting that could only be accomplished between brothers or uncommonly close friends
Sort of Hippyish

NMN are a bit darker lyrically and aurally, while the Minutemen are a bit songier.

I love both of these bands, but the slight nod goes to the Minutemen for producing more songs, more variety, more frequently. Another plus for the bite size morsels that each of their songs represent. There is a fair amount of flotsam on any given NMN record. Not so much with the Minutemen, at least not until you start getting into 3-Way Tie for Last and the like.

Minutemen.

I don't know about this. While it is true that I really don't understand the hype around NMN - I mean, they're good but not THAT good - their "dark" side seems so not dark that I would actually describe the minutemen as "darker".

The minutemen conveyed so much stuff in their music - so much WEIRD stuff that i don't think they really ever get credit for - that to compare them to NMN, who really just strike me as an intelligent and cheeky power trio, just doesn't make sense.

Then again, maybe I'm not appreciating NMN for all that they are, I've certainly have had friends who have been obsessed with them.

Theres no way the Minutemen have more material than Nomeansno.

This contest sorta isn't fair also because the Nomeansno has been around a lot longer, and they're sorta past their prime (not that their last record was bad or anything though).

The Minutemen were around for 5 years, while Nomeansno formed before the Minutemen, and are still an active band. Nomeansno also changed their guitarist/singer at one point, which effected the quality of the band.

I don't know; this is a tough one.

You know, Ace, based on what you've said about your dad being such a ginormous Beefheart fan, why don't you show him the Minutemen? I bet any good Beefheart fan would appreciate the Minutemen.

'..Headless Bourgeoise' and 'No One' are definitely darker than anything the Minutemen did.

NoMeansNo makes up for Rush in my mind. The Minutemen were great, but NoMeansNo make it possible for me to take my universal health care without feeling ashamed.

For some reason I can't get into 'Headless'; its like the only NMN album I don't really like.

'One' is most certainly darker than anything the Minutemen did. "Graveyard Shift" has to be one of their best songs (I know its my dad's favorite NMN song).

EDIT: Epitonic.com has the song for free download...

No Means No is alright. The Minutemen, on the other hand... well, you know. There's no contest.

I'm trying to think of a better way to say this, but for now: The Minutemen are everything I want North American rock music to be.

Pure fucking gold: Buzz or Howl, Paranoid Time, Bean-Spill, Double Nickels, Joy, What Makes a Man Start Fires?, The Punch Line.

I just realized that I listed nearly the entire Minutemen discography. Oh well, I stand by my statement.
