Nobody has ever come up with a reason as to why I would do that.
So I ask you, new person to accuse me of such a stupid thing...why would I do that?

"marsupialist" (which wasn't very covert, of course), "Mr. RearEntryPants" and "the Madchaosopher" all have your same IP address, so stop being such a stupid fuck about it, you twat.

you do it for attention, I guess. or maybe you're just bored.

marsupialist was obviously me, Rear entry was my roomate at the time and I have never not once posted as themadchaosopher I dont know why the fuck you think I have if you really do think that.

Minotaur029 wrote:This is one of the most interesting aspects of music today. The game has completely changed. My generation is a bunch of morons (so far...no taste despite unlimited resources). Sites like Pitchfork play a big role in controlling the discussion...sad but true. Pitchfork is a new "mini" MTV. Icky poo. Lots of Pitchfork-esque websites have sprung up as well (smaller staffs...more like a blog)...they also help direct the conversation amongst my generation.

It's not just Pitchfork though. I already consider them yesterday's news, even though they still have a huge influence.

I'm just talking about email, file sharing, and to a lesser extent, MySpace.
You can post 3 of your songs, free of charge, and anybody you direct to your site can listen. If you friends like it, they can post it on their page. This service costs you nothing.
You can go to iTunes RIGHT NOW if you hear about a band you like. People forget how often they used to say "I'll check them out" and then they forgot about that 10 minutes later. Instant gratification is good for a small band. Not everybody will spend $15 on a CD, but a buck or two at iTunes? Yeah, I'll take a chance. I may not like it, but the band made a sale, and I may think of a friend that will like it, and tell them about it.

And that's what I mean - the discussion is open. There is nothing that keeps you from finding most of the music you want, which makes you a better fan and more engaged. That's really good for bands. The extra 10% you spend on music because of that, compounded by a zillion people and distributed amongst bands that labels don't care about matters.

This is why I work for The Future Of Music Coaltion.
Founded by punk rockers, for punk rockers.

I wonder how you old timers (approximately...25 years plus?) feel about this shift. I feel as if the perception of such a change might be viewed very negatively...of course, you could also make a strong argument that nothing has changed...

Everything has changed. I'm not one for hyperbole, but the major labels are hurting, and as stated, Merge has had a #2.
Why? Nothing was impeding the fans from getting to their Arcade Fire discs. There's nobody jumping in the way saying "no no no, you don't want to listen to that, listen to THIS" by only putting Lenny Kravitz on the radio or in the record bins. If your local doesn't have it, or you like in the sticks, it doesn't matter, you can go online and buy your Lilys record.

Do you really think a band like the Shins or Modest Mouse would have made any headway if they were stuck trying to work under the old model? Eventually they may have to jump onto the big label wagon, but when they come to the table with fans, they have a lot more negotiating power.
The label doesn't need to "make" them, they made themselves.
In the case of Clap Your Hands, the deal has/had to be good enough for them to not be better off making 100% of the money generated by their fanbase.
In a sense, they can say what are YOU (label) going to do for US?

At the very least, I can send MP3's to friends, they can pass them around to whomever they want, and when we play in town x, people may show up because they like us.

To quote Ali G. "Wow, dat IZ fucking impohtant!"

It's not like everyone is going to get rich, but I know more middle class musicians now than I ever have before in 25 years of being a musician and fan.
