Drummer/Comedian: Fred Armisen

Postby noise&light on Sat Nov 28, 2009 4:05 pm

It turns out that Fred Armisen, the drummer of Trenchmouth, is a pretty funny guy.

Last night he was a guest on the Jimmy Fallon show and The Roots played (their version of) a Trenchmouth song. I think that's pretty cool.

Fred Armisen on Fallon; starts at 12:17.

Not crap. Not hilarious, but funny and talented and seems like a pretty good guy.

He does Obama on SNL. It is painfully bad.

I really don't know anything else he's done but he gets a crap vote just for this. somebody needs to stop him from doing it.

He's pretty bad on SNL, but SNL has sucked for the past decade or so. The SXSW thing is funny, though.

Trenchmouth was ok.

He was married to Sally Timms for a while.

I really like Trenchmouth a lot and his drumming is a big part of that. Comedywise, he's decent.

It isn't fair to judge any comedian by their work on SNL. The show by it's nature (sketch comedy for mainstream america) means it usually isn't funny. It's almost required to be as bland as possible. I can't think of a single comedian who did their best work while on SNL, at least in the past 20 years.

Except Jimmy Fallon, but he's only funny when he fucks up his lines on live TV.

Yes, "Fred Armisen's Guide to SXSW" is brilliant. Also, "Complicated Drumming" had some winning moments. And karaoke night at Lounge Ax...

Is he a better drummer than comedian? Cuz I know dudes who can both play the shit out of some drums and make me laugh my ass off non-stop.

The funniest I have ever seen Fred is when he opened for someone at the Merc and my crazy friend fake-laughed through his whole set. "Ahhh-HAHAHAHAHAH!" She got more laughs than him.

I agree, those skits are tough, I'm sure those guys wish they were a lot shorter, shit goes on too long.

This guy is a good drummer and is probably funny but SNL sucks.

Goddammit, Liz.

I keep seeing funny things on Jimmy Fallon. I want him to fail! Stop exposing us to funny things on Jimmy Fallon, people!

I am calling 'not crap' for his contribution to All Tomorrow's Parties in 2002 when he compered.

Waffles for his Gov. Paterson impersonation though...

I disagree. IMO, the Gov. Patterson impersonation was the only daring funny thing on SNL since Norm got booted.

TINO- My best friend, right?

RON- Yes.

Agreed, he was one of the highlights of the weekend. When there weren't bands I was particularly interested in playing, we were just following him up and down stairs watching the introductions to bands.

Also, the sketches he did with one of the ladies from Sleater Kinney were pretty funny. I haven't seen him on SNL but what I've seen of SNL generally I've found to be pretty disappointing considering the caliber of some of the comedians they've had on there so I'm totally prepared to let that go.
Don't shun it. Fun it.

It is settled then. Funny drummers remain funny as long as they entertain on their own terms and avoid scripted television. You are on integrity notice, Jon Wurster.

With Wurster's boy-ish good looks, it's kinda surprising that he hasn't been snatched up by television. I don't want it to happen but I'm just sayin'.
