Right. Like, as in what tribes put on their faces right before they go to war.

It's also a slang term used when going out clubbing or something. Putting on warpaint... lots and lots of eyeshadow/lipstick/mascara, etc.

Well, in that case i guess it fits. Haha. Yeah, not up on my clubbing slang.

Ha! I think I just saw it used on TV once, or I'd have been in the dark, too.

I'm guessing they are playing a little with a double meaning. The original term related to Native American "War Paint", facial and body painting done by warriors, then you have the "slang" for makeup. It's a slang term I remember even from New Zealand in the 80s.

It's a good band name, and they are not crap.

The first album was a bit boring, post punk by numbers. The new album is sublime! When i read they were introducing electronics i thought - here we go, another indie/disco turd, but no, it's subtle & wicked! Definitely worth checking out.

Huh, maybe it's a grower. When I flipped through it online it bummed me out.

Your not gonna get a feel for it by flipping through it. The passages don't resolve over 16-32 bars etc, they arc over entire tracks. Best bet, listen to the first three tracks a few times & see if it sticks. I can hear how it wouldn't be for everyone. A lot of reviews for it argued that it lacked hooks - it's actually loaded with them, but it take a while for them to sink in because they're not in the usual patterns.

yeah i'm impressed by the new one on the first listen. i love how there's no apparent verse/chorus structure, just flowing layers over some great rhythms

It's a pleasant atmosphere they create, pleasant sounds, but some strong hooks in the vocal melody lines that would bring it into 'really good' territory are missing. they ALMOST get there routinely, just never goes over the top, ends up as forgettable. Their overall THING is memorable and interesting, but I could not hum one of the songs right now.

Not heard the new album but that is exactly what i thought about the first album. I liked that album but without putting that album on now it was only really "Undertow" that i can recall how it went. And i think that was partly down to it being reminiscent of Nirvana's Polly.
I'll have to check out the new album tho.

I remember thinking nothing about their first album. I loved the idea of Warpaint as a band. I only just in the last week got the new one because I wanted to like them so much the first time. Holy fuck do I like this new album they put out. It's like they got their personality just right. It's so good! It makes me feel like king shit walking down the street.

I like this new album a lot, haven't heard anything else by them. I like everything about this band so far.

I too recall the term "warpaint/war paint" being used in the US 80s to refer to cosmetics.

I saw them play last night and they sounded great (better than when I saw them a couple of years ago, probably because last night's venue and organisers were pretty damn sweet). I hadn't listened to their most recent album except for a few songs, but I really enjoyed seeing them perform.

Considering they come from that LA scene Josh Klinghoffer moves in . i.e the RHCPs. I think what they are doing is very enjoyable.

They're okay but there's a British band called The Wharves who are better.

Seems fun and just cool enough. Much better and less affected than most of the new stuff I'm seeing like Savages or whatever. Not in any rush to hear it again, but one could do worse.

Boring band, with no songs. With all the resources they had you'd think they'd come up with something better than this turd. The video is just embarrassing, look at us stand around while skaters whiz by, how cool. This is why indie music blows, all style with no substance.

I had no idea this was a celebrity band trying to be all normcore. I thought it was just some LA indie girls jamming. I frown upon this, and retract my previous lukewarm positive comment.
