For me, the endless appeal of Minutemen (especially Double Nickels) is that it is one of the few rock records where there's not a single ounce of bullshit to be found. No production trickery, no attempt at sounding "accessible" to the masses, no filter of any sort. It's unadulterated rock in its purest form.

this thread put me on a minutemen kick. Put on Double Nickels this morning on the way in to work and it made me really not want to go to work. The thing about these guys is that their music is so them. Their politics and ideals and insecurities are so wrapped up together in these songs. Bands like this make me really jealous of people who are surrounded by folks with passion and a drive to create. Everyone I end up in a band with treats it like an inconvenience or a low priority.

We're planning on moving to Portland when Bec finishes grad school. Let's start a priority weirdo rock band!

Double Nickels is a perfect record and I feel nothing but sympathy for those who view it otherwise.

This band is torture to me.

On The Blasting Concept, Minutemen are certainly the worst of those bands, although their stuff on there is far better than what's on that five hour long pfunk record everyone loves. (Saccharine Trust is the best).

The rhythm that bound those guys together blocks my arteries. Try to imagine Shellac playing a Minutemen song! It would not be sweet! It would be brutal!

I like thinking about how much they must have loved each other, though. And I guess I like that song Blender used. "Sell or Be Sold" is okay, I'm saying.

They'd do a great "Paranoid Chant." You know, the one Jason Jessee used.

"Jesus and Tequila" or "This Ain't No Picnic" seem like they could work.

I don't think the drummer would go for it.

I'd be shocked if the drummer sat around loving Minutemen records.

Bass player was in Volcano Suns, so he loves Minutemen.

(This is based on listening.)

Guitar player loves Minutemen under the same principles that he hates Butthole Surfers.

(This is based on reading.)

I'd bet all my Minutemen records on it.

(I have zero.)

Missed the above Shellac/Minutemen business in 2014. That is, along with several other things I regret deeply on a personal and/or professional level.

Listening to Double Nickels now for the first time in a few months, and several of these songs could be Shellac songs. They'd need to unfunk the guitar some and cinch up the rhythm section, but the songs are most of the way there. Especially:

The Big Foist
Spillage (IIRC the Terraform deluxe edition has an outtake with this same drum track)
The World According to Nouns (just add six more minutes of that snare roll part, lapsing into total silence a couple times, between the two lines of lyrics)

I'm sure there are proto-Shellac songs on the earlier albums, but I'm having too hard a time reconciling their aesthetic to the 0:30-0:50 format. They'd barely be through the false starts and time's up.

Actually, if you start "Be Prepared" at 1:57, it's not far from a Minutemen song. Little long at 2:05, but that's OK once in a while!

Get dog costumes,

I wish I could respond to what you're saying but I'd have to listen to Minutemen. Can't do it. Sorry, man.

But having seen Shellac not too long ago, I can say that two out of the three songs I hadn't heard before were in Minutemen territory. The third one may have been good. I'd have to hear it again. It was maybe a waltz or something.

I guess I said stuff before Dude Incredible. A lot of that record is also in Minutemen territory. Pep instead of heft, you know? They are maybe life lovers now? Love is the answer, etc.

But I don't mean to trash talk love or life. I just mean to trash talk Minutemen.

The Mike Watt tour story on Party Legends is pretty crazy. Certainly explains the period where he and D. shaved their heads. Starts at 19:21.

That's crazy! Also, does anyone else think the animated D. Boon (with hair) looks like Tom Scharpling?
