Not that O'Rourke is a professional critic, but yeah, I think a little less of someone who dismisses a pretty deep well of music (and 'Dyer Maker' isn't convincingly "reggae" at all).

the famous and valuable quote is

"it's not the critic that counts."

but i'd modify it:

"it's not the critic that counts. it's reggae rhythms that count."
I composed and produced the album California is Cold by Shahmen. Our song Poison has a video.

Yeah but Dyer Maker does suck you guys. For whatever reason it’s a stinker. It ruins HotH’s chance at being their best record. I’ll take the Crunge over Dyer Maker any day.

I don't have an issue with reaggae myself, but in a time where everyone and their mother seems to have an obligation to be into it, or at very least dub, it's refreshing that he will just come out and profess his dislike of it. He's clearly not saying it to be a contrarian, the idiom just doesn't suit him.

Thanks for that link, btw, I really enjoyed the interview.

Yeah but you shouldn't blame reggae for D'Yer Maker, or use D'Yer Maker as an argument against reggae.

Ok there were geopolitical factors at play, a lot of Caribbean immigrants to the UK at that time, but reggae music never forced itself on English rock bands and I do not believe that anybody ever told Led Zeppelin they should try to play a reggae song.

If someone said that they couldn’t stand country or blues or jazz, even the good kind, I wouldn’t bat an eye. I really don’t listen to anything that doesn’t sound like a group playing instruments together, unless it’s a solo performance or something. Some people are just turned off by certain kinds of music, and I don’t think D’Yer Maker is going to change anyone’s mind about reggae.
But that Congos record might!

Also, listening to O’Rourke’s music, his not listening to reggae is no surprise at all. Would be cool to hear something approaching he did maybe sort of kinda sounding like dub.

Also, D’yer Maker is good in one context - FM radio. I feel the same about Buckingham/Nicks era Fleetwood Mac. But if I’m listening to music at home with a small record collection and a ton of music at my fingertips? Forget about it.

I assumed the person quoted was a music critic or some type of writer. And I can get someone not enjoying a genre of music; zydeco for example makes my teeth hurt with all the skritching and clacking and gumbo kitchen sounds. I don't hate the rhythm of it: just the execution and ensemblage in most recordings I've heard.

I like dub and don’t mind reggae. I just can’t stand that song. They’re a blues, rock, and folk band. They swerved out of their lane for a few minutes there.

Zeppelin never did it for me, but as I have gotten older I have softened and can get down with a lot of it. So I am going through their whole output, boy does In Through the Out Door really, really, sound like 1979. I can find things to like it the other albums, but this one...I dunno.

You ever hear a song for the first time - like a live version, or an alternate version - and it becomes your preferred version against the studio version and all others? That's how I feel about several of the songs (including the 10+ minute version of 'Kashmir') on the Robert Plant and Jimmy Page Unledded album. I fell hard for that album my senior year in high school, dubbed it onto a tape and played it in my old red Mercury Capri quite a bit.

Zep isn't crap.
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."

There's like ten consecutive minutes on their fourth album without any Bonham. What the fuck.
Kerouacian as fuck.
