Super prolific Bay Area garage rocker. Thoughts?

The few times I've seen him have been great, but I'm not entirely sold on the records, yet.

I've got the collab with White Fence and will pick up the new one today, I hope, but may not listen to either for a spell becuz I'm fearful he's do for a tumble. Both the Goner LPs, the Goner singles comp and the sessions on WFMU/Free Music Archive are really great. His band features the Moonhearts guy (whose stuff that I've heard is cool) and Mikal Cronin (whose alb is way overrated). They sound shit-hot all together.

Don't know why I'm nervous about this year's crop. The team-up with White Fence (a cool, okay Tower Recordings fan-dude) has "holy shit!" potential, but also "this stinks like shit" potential. The Ty w/Band LP should be where it's at, but something about that last album on Drag City, which was just barely not crap, has me a little hesitant.

Anyway, imo he'll need to crap out on this year's two plus a couple more in order to exit the NOT CRAP high ground. No waffles as yet.

I'm wary of the term "garage rock" nowadays because of all the boring Burger Records type shit, but this guy (unlike a lot of those bands) comes across real genuine. He digs Sabbath and Neil Young just as much as he does Pebbles/Killed by Death and his passion for rocking out comes across in everything he does.

Hearty not crap. I'm pretty apathetic to the Drag City material, but I thought Melted was fantastic. I'm looking forward to maybe buying Slaughterhouse tomorrow.

And he's good live.

I guess so, if all you've heard is his rather shitty, earliest output, when he was barely out of his teens. He put out 3 records last year, and none of them sound remotely like the Stray Cats. An absolute monster on the guitar, he and his band put on a brutal show. Melted is great, Twins might be greater.

Extremely humble and a nice guy, too.

Absolutely positively NOT CRAP.

Twins is great. I recently tracked down Slaughterhouse (Ty Segall Band) and it's really good, too. But Twins is great. Not Crap!

Live show is amazing. Less thrilled by recordings, but NC for shows alone.

Anyone saw this ?

Cool track imo. Heavy riffage, fuzz, not too much vocals.

Tons of output, unfortunately not tons of talent or worthwhile songs. His discography is like if you took Stephen Malkmus's ADD songwriting (which I don't mind) x 10. These songs just come off very half ass and thrown together. Sorry

OK... Segall's prolific and works really hard. He obviously knows his way around a lot of instruments, or at least enough to more than get by, which is better than I can say. The word from people I know and trust who are friends with him is that he's a good, standup guy. And he's doing well for himself. I genuinely commend him for those things.

But the refried garage aesthetic that he and thousands of other people are flogging does almost nothing for me. Maybe if I was friends with him I'd feel differently, but as it is it's in one ear and out the other for me. When he really lets himself go it can be okay, but people who dared compare Slaughterhouse to Fun House (as Pitchfork actually did) need to go listen to Fun House again - preferably for three days while locked in a closet.

It's just too clean and controlled, even Slaughterhouse. I never feel like he's taking real risks. But this is pretty clearly my problem.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

saw him at Porto Primavera without knowing anything about him. as people have said, the live show was super fun. i was dead tired (he was basically the last act of the festival) but i just had to jump around. the music itself is pretty dumb tho, i don't think i'll ever grab it while there's so much better stuff out there

Have tried to get into his stuff and just can't, the songs do nothing for me. I've listened to Goodbye Bread and Slaughterhouse. Crap.

I do admire his prolific tendencies, though, so, a few waffles for that.

Nothing by Ty Segall or any of his groups really grabbed me until I heard Ty Segall Band - Live In San Francisco, which was released on Castle Face last year. It's a fun, raw, extremely well captured performance. I would highly recommend this album. The Live In San Francisco series in general is fantastic. The Blind Shake's release is a powerhouse.
