Art Project: We Buy White Albums

Rutherford Chang - We Buy White Albums

In this show Chang is creating a record store that stocks only White Albums. But rather than selling the albums, he buys more from anyone willing to part with an original pressing in any condition.

I really like what he's doing in this show. Seems like an interesting take on the record, and record collecting in general. He also comes across as a decent bloke, based on that interview. NOT CRAP.

Some beautiful photographs in that article, and I enjoy the fact that he listens to the White Album every day, but I don't see how he's going to be able to get those LP's made without Apple clamping on it. I hope he does so anyway because I want one.

"Glass Onion" sounds fabulous on the soundcloud player... Look forward to the whole thing.

The recording he's made of 100 layered playings - why do they slowly become more and more out of sync toward the end?

Is he literally playing them all at once on 100 different players?

Anyway, interesting project.

Think I'll do this with "Shaft" next year.

even if he doesn't, thing is he plays them without pause from the beginning. so obviously small discrepancies gradually show up. it's an awesome experiment

I think it's more that each pass on the turntable will have moments where the speed slightly fluctuates, and since he's layered 100 recordings on top of each other, it becomes more and more noticeable. I imagine he's only using 1 turntable and just recording the output to some sort of software.

Otherwise, really interesting and well-researched project. Dude clearly knows his shit about the White Album, and I like how he's focusing on the albums that aren't in pristine conditions.

"We Buy Shaft"

Sounds much more fun than the obvious follow up: "We Buy Black Albums".*

*I will also accept Black, Black, Black and of course Blacks

about a year ago, i passed out at the doctors office during a blood test. this was not the first time i have passed out, but this was the only time where in my passed out state, i entered this weird, dreamlike world that was honestly like going to hell - i felt like i had died and enter this awful place.

i have tried to explain this to people since and could never really figure out how to describe it.

listening to Glass Onion on that recording - that is what I entered. everything felt like THAT.

Some of those beat up copies look like GBV "Propeller" collages.

Cute, silly pastime.

I like it.

Once you get past the "Oh, it's performance art" aspect you can see the other value in it: the history of popular culture contained within the conditions of those covers and the manipulations of them, the aesthetics of the "store."

I'd too like to know what happened to Nos. 2600000 to 2800000.

Much like The Grey Album, I find this far more enjoyable than the original.

I hope he's able to get the records pressed and I'll be able to score a copy.
