Part of Donald's Coachella Diary:

Like the previous Friday, most of the music I heard was in the c. 1965 Dylanesque mode, minus genius or anything like that. I've been hearing this stuff for more than a half-century and it's getting pretty dreary. Jeez, that's how I started out, more or less. I'm sure some of these guys don't even know they're doing early Bob. At least hip-hop, which is tough for me to listen to, has got a few genuine eccentrics with street energy and something to say. But wouldn't it be great to hear something as lively as, like, George Clinton, or Ian Dury and the Blockheads' There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards?

Maybe something awesome will turn up. Or not. As the Empire declines, so does culture, literacy, and almost everything else. Ironically, high technology, once thought to be the savior of civilization, has become our Alaric the First, our barbarian invasion. Increasingly, it looks like life in the future will be nasty, brutish and long.

Sorry. Fuck it. I'm in a beach hotel in La Jolla, where Raymond Chandler used to live, write and drink, so I'm feeling kind of hard-boiled. Two nights at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn and then I'm home on a break until the end of June. Thanks to Rolling Stone for the pages. Y'all be good now.

People who double down on their cynicism in old age are so tiresome.

As literacy declines? People read more now than they did 20 years ago. As the empire falls? Jesus, what a tired metaphor. I thought this guy was supposed to be clever.

He used Coachella as a cultural litmus test, how fucking clever can he really be?

More evidence that not only is every Steely Dan song terrible, but that every terrible song is by Steely Dan.

I too was not aware of this. I wouldn't be surprised to find out they wrote "Margaritaville" for Jimmy Buffet and the entire Doobie Brothers catalog as well.

In which case it would turn out that Margaritaville is about an aging paedophile and Long Train Running is about a male prostitute shooting smack into his dick.

Well I'm still talking about analogue synthesisers in that case.

The sadder thing about the Steely Dan lovers is that they are still in the Steely Dan stage at this point in their lives.

Actually, it's great! Join me, Jimmy Two Hands. I mean, join us. It won't be just us two, I promise.

Maybe he was talking about cultural literacy, since it follows that bit about the young bands not knowing they sound like early Dylan. Besides, I don't find it especially cynical, especially since there's an apology and a "maybe things will improve." Our stupid "well, that's it for me" thread is far more cynical, and most of y'all who post in there are only in middle age, not even old age.

It's Donald Fagen's Coachella diary. I don't know who pitched it, but good on them.

Here's some Coachella coverage to get upset about. Seriously, read it. Or look at it, I guess. This is the Wall Street Journal's music journalism. What the fuck. I wonder how much they spent.

Why then did he list 'culture' and 'literacy' as separate items in his itinerary of decline?

The little 'aw schucks' apology thing was weak, and as far as I can tell offers no hope. I might be biased though. Whenever an old white dude (and sorry but it's always old white dudes) starts talking about empires falling I can't help but roll my eyes.

I'm not defending Coachella, by the way. I could really care less what a bunch of coked out rich kids do during their 3rd holiday of the year.

That's what you say, but here you are obsessing over the behavior of Donald Fagen.

I'm against an attitude/worldview he has which is common for his cohort. The same thing he said about coachella could be said about a number of different youth culture examples. And it would still be asinine.

As I write this and fuck around on the internet instead of doing coursework, I've been listening to Steely Dan and "The Nightfly". This shit might be growing on me, but the slickness still turns me off.

One time around 2003 I confused Steely Dan with Steve Miller. You should have seen my manager sputtering with indignation. Honestly can't decide who I'd rather listen to for eternity in hell. My gut says Steve Miller, but I think there's more to "discover" in Steely Dan, or at least there is a more nuanced form of Stockholm syndrome to be developed under the Dan's brand of torture.

I re-read several pages of this thread yesterday and found another thing that amuses me about Steely Dan: despite the fact that nobody can agree what certain songs are about (it's about a joint! No, it's about a male prostitute! No, it's about Eric Clapton's heroin dealer!), everyone agrees that the lyrics are subversive and skeevy.

All I see, for at least some songs, is a bunch of vague 70s blandness, none of which is remotely subversive.

Whenever I am somehow involuntarily exposed to Steely Dan I get this image in my head of a Rich Cali Dude with gold chains a pornstache and a bunch of Cocaine Chiwawahas around his hot tub.

And a big red golden retriever.

I think Steely Dan is the sound track of this lifestyle.

If they had not been putting out albums they would have been writing theme songs to sitcoms like Barney Miller or John Holmes movies.

You know what's interesting?

I really like Steely Dan, always have, own many records etc.

I'm sure I think about them less than quite a lot of people who hate them.

I'm not sure I could ever honestly say I "Hate" Steely Dan, though I am absolutely positive that I have said it. The most offensive thing about the SD to me is that the music just emotionally does nothing for me, which is pretty much the worst thing music can do. I'd rather be offended by music than just simply not moved at all. I get why people like, and even love it. I TOTALLY understand why EVERY sound guy over a certain age, and a lot that are younger use it to balance a sound system. It just isn't for me.

No shit. Same here.

I really dislike crap like Lightning Bolt and other headache-noise bands, but I spend very little time if any in threads about them, going on and on.

I've made up my mind.

This band is not crap. "My Old School", which is as good as any of the white boy soul that David Bowie was doing, and Countdown to Ecstasy sealed it for me.
